She's back but catching up with three weeks' worth of email so it may take

her a little while to get to this one. Vicki

Heidi, I'm confused. Are your dietician and CDE indicating that sugar

contains some nutrient other than carbs? One sugar cube, at 0.1oz.

contains 2.83 carbs, all sugar of course. So how does one work in real

sugar, or is this only for those diabetics who cover their carbs with

insulin? I'm not challenging anyone's statements here, just curious as

to how they suggest incorporating real sugar into a carb-controlled

diet. Or, perhaps they are NOT advocating carb control? Inquiring

minds, donchano.

Dear Lily,

I'm over 600 posts behind. I'll never be able to read them, but I did

see your message below. My cynical self says that " study " was funded

by commercial sugar interests. We all know that eating sugar does not

give us diabetes. We basically become type 2 because we inherit type

2 diabetes genes, and then if we don't exercise like fiends and keep

our weight down, that 800-pound gorilla will sneak up and bite us on

the butt. The study they refer to is not done in a clinical setting.

They merely ask volunteers to self-report their sugar intake, and

what they report may vary widely from reality. And it isn't just

sugar (sucrose) ... it's all carbohydrates that spike us. I have lost

all respect for the American Diabetes Association's " Diabetes Care. "

Over half the magazine's pages are devoted to ads. The ADA strikes me

as an organization that exists only to perpetuate itself and promote

its advertisers.

We who are already diabetic know what sugar does to us ... All we

have to do is finger-poke or arm-stick.
