Guest guest
Hey yall, For over the past 1 year I've been having this lumpy feeling in my throat whenever I eat or drink anything. Everytime I swallow it feels like the stuff is getting stuck in my lower throat/chest area and takes a while to get down. If I eat or drink anything too fast i also begin to gag and this gagging sometimes continues for 5 minutes straight, its actually made me vomit a few times in the past. It also takes a while for me to digest food. I have heard that this is associated with a slow thyroid which is why the food gets stuck in your chest. Could this be a goitre? Is there some kind of self examination I can do on myself to rule this out? My TSH is elevated and I am going to be starting on armour soon. Thanks in advance

That feeling is associated with Hashimoto's...I don't know exactly what causes it but I think it's just the inflammation from the antibodies. I get it frequently...but do not have a goiter at all. Guest guest
My God, I was so excited to see that someone else is having trouble swallowing and it has been going on for a while. I have been to the ENT doctor who sent me to a neurologist who ordered a swallowing test done that showed everything was normal. I am being set up for a scope to see what is happening. Even things like icecream are now sitting in my upper chest and it feels cold for minutes after eating. Can this really be thyroid related? To date the mds have not said anything about goiter or the fact I've been on synthroid for more than 30 years. I actually have and appt in a hour or so with my internist and I intend to ask him about switching to Armour. I don't want to do it behind his back.. Guest guest
I had this problem for a while, when I first started to have thyroid problems - but rarely have it now. My mom has it, and the dr. gave her his horrible medicine to mix in her food to make it slide down. They did that for my grandmother too, but she was 97-98 years old. Now my mom takes a pill for reflux, and she's been fine. they decided her throat was irritated from reflux - it worked for her. I'm sure there are a lot of reasons it happens. I blamed mine on my thyroid - but I didn't really know.
