...despite what you may have heard, insulin does NOT necessarily make

you gain weight. However, with the insulin regime you're on, which requires

you to eat a certain amount at certain times, this could definitely cause you

to gain weight because you're eating to feed the insulin, not the other way

around.

If you were matching insulin to carbs and keeping your carbs and calories

down, I can practically guarantee you wouldn't gain weight, and you could

probably lose what you don't want.

I've been diabetic for five plus years, on insulin for most of that time, and

I haven't gained a pound more than I wanted to.

It's tough being without insurance, I understand this, but avoiding diabetic

complications are worth whatever you can afford. Ultralente insulin (used for

basal) does not require a doctor's prescription, is quite inexpensive and is

a much better insulin IMHO than regular insulin.

I belong to another diabetes list whose moderator is very knowledgeable about

insulin dosing and could guide you in changing from R and NPH to other more

efficient insulins. If you'd like join-up information, just say the word and

I'll post it. (BTW, this is for anyone on this list who'd like to join the

other list - it's called LC-D for lowcarb-diabetes.) You do need a prescription

for Humalog and it's probably more expensive than NPH but maybe not beyond your

means. Please check it out.
