BravoDaphne!!! I agree it is an individual decision. My son started preschool

at 3 because he received speech and OT along with free preschool.I probably

wouldn't have put him in preschool until 4 if I would have had to pay for

it.I stayed home with my son full time until he started Kindergarten two

years ago and work 20-24 hours a week where my husband watches him.If he

worked a different shift and I had to pay for day care I would also stay home

and scrimp like usual. All of our decisions are personal ones for our kids

and works well with them.My son didn't need the socialization to be honest

with you because we did something everyday that he was exposed to kids, play

group, park ect.I did this for him as well as me.There are no stay at home

Mom's or kids in our neighborhood and I knew that he needed to be around

other kids.I heard you need to move so can play with the neighborhood

kids so you don't have to drive to and from places and other friends

houses.Yes I would like to move but financially it isn't an option especially

when our house,as little as it is is paid off.I agree I get SO tired of other

people's cpmments.Anyway, just wanted to tell you I know how you feel and

agree.Gretchen

On the subject of PreSchool my daughter (4 July 31st, diagnoses in April,

PRO EFA in late May) started our public 1/2 day tuition preschool (that we

are, of course, receiving free). She will be receiving 3 -20 min. sessions

of speech ea. week. This is a 3-4 yr. old class. I was very concerned

about behavior, attention, etc. And the teacher has reported a VERY

Successful week. I am so thankful and relieved. She has been receiving O.T

and Speech at our Children's Hospital, so I am having here evaluated again

for O.T. at school. Not sure if she will qualify yet. We will see.

I am still praying for her year, decisions on K-garden readiness, etc. Just

wanted to share or good start (and answer to prayer.)

It sounds like the school year is starting out good for a big group

of us. I pray it continues.

Mine went three days a week in the AM. He got speech and OT on those days and

LOVED pre-school.I am really glad that I didn't have to pay for preschool

because I know that I wouldn't have started him at 3 ,but I did because it

was all paid for.I know what the cost was and I know that I couldn't have

afforded it.I am really glad that he went not only from a learning standpoint

but from socialization. This helped to keep him un bored. The more structure

the better for him.Hope that helps.Gretchen from Missouri

Thank you, Gretchen. Just a tad worried I guess. Wiley always shows he's

had enough by begging for tv time or tantrumming. I mean, after a morning

in a cluttered house with one other child he can be screaming at me all

afternoon. But of course I hope a preschool is a lot more structured and

orderly... if so, he'll do fine. But when things get too chaotic, he tends

to space out - in fact he seems pretty even-tempered as it all happens

around him, but then when I get him home, it's like watch out. The Wiley

wrath.

I do have a question - isn't preschool typically free? A lot of moms have

mentioned how great it is that preschool is free for their children - but I

thought public preschools were always free. Confused on this one.

-Betsy,

If your child is identified for special ed. services the pre-school

is free, FAPE otherwise just sending your child to preschool is not,

I know in NH even Jack who is in special ed services has been

indentified has to be in school or some sort of educational program

to receive therapy, OT, PT, ST.

I think this depends on if your state offers public preschool and also what

kind of preschool you want your child to attend. Here in PA, we do not have

public preschool. However, Gavin could go to one of their preschool programs

free of charge. Their classrooms consist of only disabled children. We want

him to be in a community preschool with typically developing children to

model language from. They will not pay for this. However, we are in the

middle of due process to determine who's responsibility it is to pay the

tuition. Hope this helps.

Around here there are of course the church based preschools that are tuition

based. My school district has there own preschools, three in the district to be

exact. The only requirements is that you have to be a resident in the district

to attend it.If you don't qualify for being special needs or for " special

services " then you pay tuition like a church preschool. My girlfriends kids

went to the same preschool that my son did but she paid because they had no

problems.I don't remember what she paid but it wasn't cheap.Hope this

helps.Gretchen
