Guest guest
My name is Marcie and I have a 4 year old son that was full term, 10 lbs 4 oz healthy baby. The pregnancy was uneventful and he was my second child and first son. His first year of life, he had constant ear infections on and off until the age of 8 months. We were never referred to an ENT so buttons were never done, but the ear infections stopped at 8 months. From that point on, he was a very happy and healthy baby and toddler. He reached all of his develop. milestones on time (rolling, crawling and walking) and everything was great until around 2 years old when the pediatrican became concerned that he wasn't speaking. He had always babbled and I just wasn't concerned. We had his hearing checked which was normal. We were referred to a speech therapist and began speech twice weekly, which has increased to 3-5 sessions a week. His speech has improved. He can speak in short choppy sentences, but has severe articulation problems. Most people have trouble understanding what he says. I also have noticed some mild motor problems with his hands (the way he holds them sometimes) and he toe walks. I am currently trying to get him evaluated by an OT. He recently began to stutter, repeating the first word of a sentence or question and often times gets frustrated and says " forget it " . I am worried this will effect his self esteem. Along with his stuttering he has developed a tic that has come once before but has left for several months and then returned (he blinks his eyes funny). What are these fatty acids that I have read about on this site? Do you need a prescription? We just don't have any informed doctors or therapists in my town. The schools want to label the children and place them in special ed. When our school system evaluated him, they were trying to place him in a special ed preK, but he didn't qualify because he was too bright (he knows his colors, shapes, can count to 20, address, phone number and can operate the computer better than my husband and I). My fear is that he will fall between the cracks. I don't want him labeled in school. He is large for his age (looks like a 6 or 7 year old). When people see him they assume he is retarded because he looks much older than he is. Does anyone have any advice for the articulation, tics and stuttering?
