Guest guest
I suppose the daughter's near death experience did have a motive, Showing the difference in the mom's attitude when the table was reversed. I should have said that in my original post. The husband carrying the cooler was a little dramatic. I know, you're all thinking how critical, me too! Sorry. I did enjoy the show, despite my criticism. It did send the message it was meant to, I hope viewers understood the importance of deciding as soon as possible. Also a reminder to all that just by signing a card and putting it in your purse means nothing, if you don't discuss it with your family. In this case it would have made a big difference. I always try to stress that wen I ask people to sign a donor card. Which by the way, I have gotten lots to do since my own dilema. again! Guest guest
>Tonight's episode of Touched by an Angel was terrific. It's really great to >see dwarfism in the public eye and done factually--it discussed limb >lengthening, name calling. It really moved me. I had some mixed feelings >about the characters but....that's just me. When I saw what it was going to be about, I called a whole bunch of people to ask them to watch it. None of them were home, but oh well. I did miss the end, though I expect it turned out at least somewhat " happily ever after. " Would anyone care to tell me if I'm right? Actually, it made me do a lot of thinking. I must confess that I think I'm a lot more insecure about my height than I'm willing to admit. I am taking a big risk in saying this since my mother subscribes to this list, but, oh well ... I am not entirely convinced that my parents are all that secure about my size either. I don't mean to say that they reject me as a person, but I would say there's been a lot more hand-wringing and attempts to be excessively helpful where I'm concerned than where my three siblings are concerned. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people with disabilities have only begun to be mainstreamed into society in the last 30 years or so, so I think ... and anyone on this list please feel free to offer your input on this ... that they may be a little bit more concerned than they need to be about my ability to function in the world, simply because they have seen society going through those growing pains of accepting any minority into society as a whole, whereas I don't perceive it as much because most of my experience has been on the other side of that. As for how that relates to me, I think it has a sort of transference effect, in that I have had to unlearn the message that it is supposed to be unusually hard for me to succeed in life, therefore, the " easy " way out (i.e. SSI, Medicaid, Vocational Rehab, invoking ADA at every turn) is the " best " way out. I fully admit that I blow my parents off a lot of the time. Not that they don't have valuable input, but I have a perspective which they will never have. My parents, for example, see absolutely nothing wrong with me taking advantage of Medicaid, SSI, and every other government program under the sun. I do. My mother derides this as being an example of my foolish pride. Yes, it's pride. I'm proud of being able to succeed in life on my own terms. I'm proud that I EARNED the money to buy the food I put on my table (well .... my kitchen counter ... we don't have a dining-room table) and to put the roof over my head. If wanting to earn your own keep in this world is foolish pride, then I'm one of the most foolishly proud people you'll ever meet. But ... I still think I'm more insecure about my height than I like to admit. And quite frankly, I wonder how much of that was instilled in me when I was growing up and constantly being told that I was different, that I was going to be treated differently, discriminated against, etc. I don't mean I should have been released into the world with the blind naivete of Barney the Dinosaur, but I also don't think I should have gone out with the idea that I had to be on the defensive every time I turned around. I'm going to get a very angry phone call and/or e-mail from my mother now. Too bad. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
>So, please lose the attitude that SSI recipients are losers and don't >want to work. I worked for twenty four years before my body had enough. If I conveyed that attitude, please accept my heartfelt apologies. I do not believe SSI receipients are losers. In retrospect I probably conveyed the attitude that SSI recipients have no pride, either. Neither of these is anywhere near true. All I'm saying is that since I don't *have* to be on SSI, I don't want to be. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Pet peeve time...clown in a circus? How cliche. The acting was good though. However my pet peeve is this. When is the last time anyone saw an LP acress on television or in the movies...especially in a central role? Lots of LP men lately but no women. What's up with that? Guest guest
Sorry to disagree with you Karin. I've been in a few projects lately. I.E. MadTV, Good Morning, Being Malkovich, working on a contract with a Video store to do a commercial here in Oregon, etc. I just don't over-announce when I do a project. Maybe I should get the " In your face attitude " , but really I'm not that kind of person. I really, really do wish there were more roles for me. Guest guest
I rarely watch Mad T.V. Judy. However, what I am referring too is that the majority of LP roles are male dominated. The reason I mentioned that as a pet peeve is yes, I would like to see you (and more female LPs in upcoming roles). I do have to take back that I haven't seen any LP women. I recently watched " " where an LP actress played a lady in waiting/advisor to the queen who inherited the throne from. Now that was a good movie. Guest guest
Hi Barbara, We thought the same thing, the episode was 'very well' done. Thoughtful and sensitive. We would like to compliment the actors and writers of the show. Thank You Sherry/Richie

Guest guest
Hi watched the show and I thought it was well done. It IS nice to see an LP in a starring role. My only beef is that I was sad to see they made the character so unhappy with his body. Im not saying that the LPs that DO feel that way shouldnt but I think that in the " public " eye we need to show that MANY of us are VERY happy being " different " from the norm. I would not change my height if I had 3 wishes. (I would wish to get rid of the health problems that are a result of my dwarfism, but I wouldnt change my height). Being an actor .... my ideal role would be a confident, strong domineering woman who is SOO comfortable with her body that she is very respected. Iam very much this person in my real life already but I would love to represent this " character " to the world. There is no reason why I need to be meek and mild and embarassed about being a dwarf and if anyone is embarassed about me......well kiss my @ss! I dont have any young children YET but when I do I am going to do my best to raise him/her with a positive attitude about dwarfism as well as letting them know how other kids will tease etc. My 2 step-kids are young adults and I know they are very proud and pleased to have me as a step mother. Anyho..... the show touched on some interesting, never-before explored issues which is a START. We can only hope that we will progress into more major roles with confident roles. lee www.lee.com

I would love to see a story about CMT. You would be a good one to have on it, since you are a young girl and have lots of problems from the CMT.
