Guest guest
Simple answer, ...watch portion size, watch calories, watch carbs. And exercise daily. Guest guest
> Simple answer, ...watch > portion size, watch calories, > watch carbs. My problem is that just watching is not enough. I have to weigh everything and calculate it out. My target is 1500kcal/day and I can keep to that except for three or four days a month when I find I have hit 2000 without noticing much difference on the plate. What I do is have a 1000kcal day the following day to maintain my 1500 kcal average but my physician does not like the idea of such a large swing. If I don't weigh my food every day, I do not see the 2000s and therefore do not do the 1000s and before very long every day is a 2000 and up I go again! Part of the difficulty is that I don't prepare my own meals but eat from what my wife serves me. Mostly it works out right but the move upwards comes very slowly and tends to go unnoticed unless I am weighing everything. It is never one big jump but just a very little more of everything that slowly makes the difference to me. > And exercise daily. I have no difficulty doing that - one hour net, with warm-up and cool-down and shower and change of clothes, that makes about 2 hours a day total, including pauses. I do it in two halves, half in the morning and the other half in the evening. I go for regular routine checkups and each time I leave, my physician waves goodbye and says: " Don't forget - it's lifelong! " In that respect, overweight is in the same class as diabetes! I have another 10 kg (22 lbs) to go to get back down to my sustainable long-term weight - I just have to learn how to sustain it AND have a life at the same time! - all-time max. weight (Jan 2000): 98.6 kg (217 lbs) - weight at last peak (May 22, 2004): 91.6 kg (202 lbs) - present weight: 87.5 kg (193 lbs) - target weight (May 2005): 77.5 kg (170 lbs) - rate of weight loss: = 0.24 kg (0.5 lb)/week
Guest guest
> Well...I weigh out everything I eat > too. I dont' find it odious at all. I don't find it odious - it is just that I feel that as folks who were never overweight don't need to do it - and I never needed to do it either before I got involved with this metabolic syndrome business - there ought to be some way to get back to that condition. Anyway, I am determined not to go back up again this time, whatever it takes! > And if your problem is that your wife > prepares all your meals I have > another suggestion for you, ... > you could do it yourself, smile. I > bet she'd even appreciate that. She won't let me - I make too much mess and break things. And the stuff I make is uneatable anyway. I think it is something like having " green " fingers to be able to look after plants, you need an " eye " to me able to cook properly, I can't even make bread in an autonatic bread machine - it comes out as a sticky mess! Guest guest
> I'm surprised your wife is not > more careful about what she > serves you...if I had the chance > to have a trim healthy hubby I'd > do whatever Id have to to assist. Oh, she is very careful about what she serves, much more careful than I would be if I lived alone. She is just too generous with the quantities and says that I am a big boy now, I should know how much to take. But that is exactly the problem, many " big boys " don't realize how much they are taking until it is already down there. Then again you have to take into account that she is clinically underweight and normally won't let me see how much she eats. In restaurants I do see it and it makes me shudder. We usually order the same meal and she insists that I " help her out " which means I get to eat mine and half of hers. I keep pointing out that the result is I get to eat exactly three times as much as she does but she won't listen to reason. If I refuse to eat half hers then she won't eat anything at all - and we have usually gone into the restaurant in the first place because she was the one who felt " hungry " ! Since I have gone from 91.6 kg (202 lbs) down to 87.5 kg (193 lbs), she has gone from 48.5 kg (107 lbs) down to 45.8 kg (101 lbs). My fight to lose weight causes her to lose weight too when she really needs to gain some! We were both diagnosed type 2 at about the same time, both are taking oral medication, both have roughly the same BG values - but have totally different weight problems and are eating vastly different amounts of everything. You might want to contemplate the situation of a family in which some members are chronically overweight and others are in effect anorexic. It starts by shopping, gets worse when deciding what to prepare and finishes by trying to ensure an equitable share-out of the meals!
