Hello kjv16114me@... ( ),

In reference to your comment:

è I am a new MT and I just ordered: Drake & Drake

è (Sauders) Pharmaceutical Word Book Stedman's Plus

è 2001 Spellchecker I ordered them thru

è Booksamillion.com for a total of $107.90 for both with

è shipping. Is this enough to get started or what else do I

è need?

Hi : What else do you have??? Dorlands? Vera Pyle's Current Medical

Terminology? Tessier's Surgical Word Book? An abbreviation/eponym book?

(Neil ' abbreviations is excellent). I'd definitely recommend these,

and then as you go along and see what specialties you'll be doing, you could

order the Stedman books and add them gradually. I know books are expensive,

but they are worth their weight in gold and tax deductible as a business

expense besides. Let me know if you need any other suggestions :)

Remember... WSTPMTR (which means,

whoever signs the paycheck makes the rules).

I would also suggest a lab book like Stedmans pathology and lab Medicine

or Lippincotts Manual of Laboratory and Diagnostic tests.

And...

Do you have a medical dictionary. I use Taber's and Dorlands now.

you're off to a good start, and have already gotten some very good

suggestions...one thing that I have always used is Taber's Medical

Dictionary (been a transcriptionist for 8 years), but everyone has their own

favorites. Stedman's books are good, although they do not give the

definition, and I find oftentimes things are not listed that really should

be in the Stedman's. Good luck to you.

It all depends on what specialty(ies) you will transcribing. If you are

involved with acute care hospital dictation then you will need quite a few words

books. Word books will give you reference to the terms and phrases most used

within a certain specialty. If you are doing OB/GYN as your report you sent in

indicates then Stedman's OB/GYN wordbook would be sufficient to start. Our

library contains about 20 word books and dictionaries. Also word books will

become outdated and you will have to replenish them but they are invaluable to a

transcriptionist, especially just starting out. Give us some information on

your training and the types of dictation you will be getting and we can better

advise you.

You should definitely have a lab reference book. I have " A Manual of Labmoratyr

and Diagnostic

Tests " 6th Edition, by Frances Fischbach. I have also used Stedman's

Abbreviations, Acronyms and

Symbols a lot, along with Stedman's Cardiology and Pulmonary Words.

What kind of work are you going to be doing? You can get specialty books from

Stedman's.

As Jan said, the books may be expensive, but they are definitely worth it when

you find the word or

phrase you need.
