I had my leg amputated below the knee from having week ankles and

then I got an infection in the bone my question is Can CMT cause my

ankles to be weak enough from CMT to cause this??

Yes , In my opinion it can. My sons ankles are so weak they swing as he takes

a step. Like a rag doll. The Doctor told me my son can't even have a tendon

transfer he only has 1 good tendon.

I remember someone I met online a long time ago had both feet amputated due

to CMT.

CMT is not an infectious process it is a genetic defect and therefore

resident in all tissues, but weakened muscles can result in abnormal

pressures on limbs, backs, etc. and cause other orthopedic problems. Sorting

it out is the difficult part ! - EdM

Jill,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. What is a knee arthrodesis and if you are now

pain free, why the amputation, is it because you do not have the flexibility in

the leg? Will you be able to be fit with an artificial leg? Hopefully that will

end up giving you greater ambulatory than what you ever had.

Good luck and keep us posted. Do you know when you are going to have this?

Hi Jackie,

An arthrodesis is fusion of the knee joint so it is now perm. stiff. After

much research etc I will be better off with a prosthetic leg and walking and

dealing with day to day stuff will be easier. I dont have a date yet. Love to

all.

At one time there was a man in one of the support groups that had so much pain

from CMT that he was not working. He had both legs amputated and was back to

work pain free. He would suggest this to anyone in this much pain to look into

amputation.
