Guest guest
Hello, I wanted to share some of my story and relay info on silent reflux and related problems since it was so difficult to find. My 28 month old boy has some signs of apraxia but doesnt quite fit the profile. He also has some signs of Sensory Integration disorder but again, doesnt quite fit that profile either. He does have reflux, it was undiagnosed and untreated until age 21 months. By that time, he was extremely hypersensitive orally, severe tactile defensiveness (but only with food), speech delayed and eating only pureed foods. He's had extensive speech therapy and OT for the past 6 months and we've made lots of progress as far as oral-motor skills - he can blow bubbles, toot a horn, etc. But absolutely no progress at all with his eating. After reading everything and anything I could find on Apraxia, tactile defensiveness, SID, etc, I still felt pretty strongly that he didnt quite fit those profiles. My feeling is that the reflux went untreated for so long that he developed a phobia about foods and eating. He seems normal in every way except for things that deal with his mouth. I found that my suspicions may not be wrong. I found an incredible website - www.feedingcenter.org that helps little ones just like my son. There is a bulletin board on the website also, it was encouraging to see others working on the same issues as we are. I'll post back once we complete the eval & start the progam.
