Her blood sugars being around 200. Her weight is a bit higher, perhaps 250,

but she is 5'8'' and big boned.

I don't think her blood sugars should be so high, but because she is stable

and stays at around 200, rather than bouncing around, I guess that is why.

She takes at least four pills per day that I know of, and they can't get her

below 200. I asked her if he thought she should be on insulin, because she

is very tired, and maybe it would help her. She doesn't want to do

that...and I could be wrong suggesting it, after all, I am not on insulin

myself.

I even had to fight with her to check her bgs, she said she 'couldn't afford

a meter', since her insurance changed. She should have had one long before

that, actually.

It's not the meter that's the expense, alas, as much as the strips

if your insurance doesn't co-operate. Mine list *ALL* strips as

" Brand - Preferred " so no matter /what/ meter I get, a fill of strips

(my doc writes mine for 100 strips, even tho I won't likely use 100

in a month) is $30. Usually I can go 2 months on that.

A *LOT* of meters are priced around $80 or so, with a $40 or $50

rebate included inside the package. The new Freestyle comes to

mind. I think they were $79 at the pharmacy and then had a

special $40 rebate on them.

There are some very inexpensive meters and strips. The meter probably

doesn't remember readings and give you averages and have a way to download

to a computer but you can keep your own written records.

The diabetes class I went to gave everyone a free meter. Not the inexpensive

ones though.

My late mother-in-law didn't want to spend money on her blood pressure

medicine. She wanted a fancy red sports car and the gas for people to drive

her around. She had a stroke and ended up in a nursing home and we had to

make her a notebook with pictures to point to cause for a long time she

couldn't talk right.

Beg, borrow, or steal (just kidding about stealing) an inexpensive meter.

Use a lot of strips at first and learn how to eat then when you are doing

well and understand what raises your bgs, you don't have to test so often.

Diabetes is sneaky and often you don't know what problems it is causing till

it is too late to prevent it.

Surely she has friends or family that would help with the cost or buy her

one as a gift. The gift of life maybe?
