Guest guest
That's great, Tricia! Imagine if just a few of each of our friends and family took the time to send letters/e-mails (which Tricia made easy to do by providing a template and contact info)... Guest guest
Actually, Tricia, any chance you could post the template letter to the list so we could all use it (though we'd still have to look up our own representatives, which can be done easily I imagine over the Internet - I think http://thomas.loc.gov has links). I've already written my own faxes and e-mails, signed numerous petitions, etc. (can't even keep track of who I've called, e-mailed, or faxed anymore!). But if I had a template, that would have made my life so much easier! Sandy, Illinois

Guest guest
Good Morning: I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The Senate has adjourned until Tuesday, December 9th. We do not anticipate that the IDEA Reauthorization will be addressed this year. It is likely that it will be brought to the floor early next year. The Senate reconvenes for the remainder of the 108th Session on Tuesday, January 20th. The Republicans and Democrats have entered into a unanimous consent decree limiting the number of amendments to be offered and the corresponding time for debate. We anticipate that the Democratic amendments will include provisions for homeless/foster children and research into the environmental causes of developmental disabilities. An amendment requiring mandatory full funding of the IDEA will definitely be offered by Senator Harkin. The Republican amendments will likely include an amendment changing the provisions of the IDEA regarding the recovery of attorneys' fees and some type of paperwork reduction model. It is our understanding that the Republicans have given up any plan for an amendment removing children with disabilities from the annual yearly progress provisions of the NCLB. You must remain vigilant. We believe that many controversial issues will be revisited in conference when the conferees attempt to reach a consensus between H.1350 and S.R. 1248. As many of you already know, my fellowship with Senator Harkin has come to an all too quick conclusion. My last day in his office will be Friday, December 12th. I am returning to Phoenix, Arizona where I will put my new found understanding of the legislative process to work, and continue my practice of law under the Americans with Disabilities and Fair Housing Acts. I will resume my employment at the Arizona Center for Disability Law on February 2nd. Meanwhile, my golden retriever and I will be making the long journey back to Arizona. I'll be traveling to Costa Rica in January before returning to work for a much needed vacation!! Smile. This has been the most awesome year of my life. I cannot sing enough praises about Senator Harkin. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with the finest elected official in the country. He is a tireless advocate, a brilliant statesman, and one of the kindest and most considerate people I have ever met. I will miss him dearly. My year has been made all the more special because I have had the opportunity to work with the great people on this list. Everyone of you has played an important role in this reauthorization. I would not have made it without your help. You are also tireless advocates and some of the most incredible people I have found in my career. Thank you for all you have done for this office, and for your support during the long process of this reauthorization. Keep up the good fight. You will be in my thoughts. Have a wonderful holiday season! , J.D. -- Kennedy Disability Fellow Office of Senator Tom Harkin 731 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510-1502 202.224.3254 202.228.0404 (fax) julie_carter@...
