Guest guest
, " Recovered " autistics are just rumors. There's nothing to recover from. Autistics who live happy, fulfilling lives -- as autistic people -- are not. Many of us are even proud of our " autism " (and isn't that a reification mess?). -- Cheezem aspieperspective.blogspot.com Hi!!! Could anybody please tell me , if there is a DAN doctor in the Miami Area.I have been buying tests by myself since my daughter´s primary doctor told me that " recovered autistics are just rumors " . I need to know if Medicaid-waiver covers any of those tests. My daughter is 25 years old, but you know.....I have to keep trying!.Sometimes I don´t know who is more autistic , my daughter or me!!Sequenzia, you were so helpful and kind to me when my daughter was at Kensington Park Elementary....a Long, long time ago. Guest guest
Hello : You cannot convince those of us whose children are crying for hours, banging their heads, eating wooden furniture, and other things that autistic people can do are, in reality, happy, well adjusted, and even proud. Many of our children are unable to speak, read, enjoy the company of others or even a movie without experiencing turmoil and pain. - The chemical imbalances they are experiencing are torturing them, and ridiculing those of us who are trying to help our children find peace through natural, non-chemical and non-drug means are deeply insulting. As a person with Asperger's, you are in an entirely different category than many who are on other places on the spectrum. You can speak for yourself as to recovery, but do not ever again assume to speak for everyone else who is affected by autism. Janet Mother of 3 autistic children, Miami > > > Hi!!! Guest guest
We know those on all parts of the Spectrum... and acknowledge that quality of life varies. I know does not mean to ridicule - he's not wired that way. However, he has firsthand experience with various treatments and does not want anyone to suffer. did say " many " when he spoke of Autistic Pride... but please don't hate him for speaking for some of our brethren who don't express themselves as well.Chemical imbalances and other conditions that may be present along with autism are NOT autism and should not be confused with it. Neither nor I believe in " recovery from autism " BUT that is not to say that therapies and treatments are not warranted and much-needed. And that is also not to say that people won't recover from some of those other conditions, especially those that are environmentally induced. There is also the fact that many who could not communicate before, like Carly for example, now are able to with assistive technology which we would LOVE to see more money put into for our people. When they can tell us WHY they're crying for hours perhaps it will be easier to zero in on treatment for some. But never all. Because we are all different. And I don't think or I would ever presume to speak for ALL Autistic people, however, there are many who agree with us and appreciate our advocacy on their behalf. Like you resent the suggestion that we speak for your child, we resent the implication that none of the autistic people can speak for themselves. Many can.On Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 2:23 PM, masterspowell <janet.powell@... > wrote: Hello : You cannot convince those of us whose children are crying for hours, banging their heads, eating wooden furniture, and other things that autistic people can do are, in reality, happy, well adjusted, and even proud. Guest guest
Janet, I was not ridiculing you, or anyone else. That said, I know many people with " autistic disorder " diagnoses. They, by and large, agree with me. Would you like me to link to accounts written by " low-functioning " adults about the matter? They're easily available. Many of them self-injure or have self-injured. All of them have had very significant life-challenges because of features of their neurology (I'd get into further specifics, but they vary too much) which have been labled " symptoms " of their " autism " (again -reification mess here). Many of them were the sort of autistic child who would run into traffic. You also assume that I do not and have not had these issues, something which is inaccurate. I cannot, for instance, go to the movies -- because of pain. That is a matter which applies to me today. I have even, in the past, exhibited what would be considered self-injurious behavior (I didn't think of it that way at the time). I still shudder at some of the stuff I probably put my parents through whenever I stop to think about it. I cannot claim to have experienced the inability to speak, mind, at least within recent memory. Want me to link you to a frank discussion by an adult who still can't? I could go on and on, but I think you probably get the idea by this point. -- Cheezem aspieperspective.blogspot.com Hello :You cannot convince those of us whose children are crying for hours, banging their heads, eating wooden furniture, and other things that autistic people can do are, in reality, happy, well adjusted, and even proud. Guest guest
-------------------------------------- With respect, yes - you were ridiculing. And you are now, as well, i.e. " This, incidentally, *is* mocking -- or at least mocking one of the sillier assertions contained in your message. " You have no right to insult other people. You seem lost on this point, as does your other friend on this list. I will not respond to any other posts on this matter from either you or her. It is truly a shame that a list that was once a place for support and resources for parents with autistic children here in South Florida has now turned sour and ugly because of a few bad apples. Guest guest
I do not want to take sides on this but every person who has a kid on the spectrum goes through emotional turmoil and as Janet says those with low functioning non verbal kids clearly do not appreciate being patronised by others whose situation is different. This is supposed to be a list for advice and support and anything else is not really appropriate. So please if there is going to be this kind of " discussion " why not continue it by private e- mail ? Guest guest
Thanks! I agree we need to build each other up not tear our support group down. Our angry, or reckless, or critical words are bullets - and it's all too easy to pull that trigger. In fact, it takes the help of God and our personal discipline to keep from firing off a round of wounding words. But once you pull that trigger, there's no way to get that round back. Long after you've forgotten what you said, that person is still feeling the hurt of it, still hearing it over and over again in their heart. The words take a moment; the wounds can last for yearsGot this at www.biblegateway.com Rose President, Sleep Safe Bed inc. Guest guest
I completely agree with you Lydia and you were very articulate in how you expressed your own sentiments, which mirrored mine to a great extent. Thank you for being brave enough to keep posting and sharing. From: Lydia Glider- Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 9:10 PM To: sList Subject: Re: Re: Dan Doctor in Miami Area.
