I think that if it was there long term there would be symptoms and you would be struggling to find ways to fight it. I think that it can take a toll on your immune system but I don't think it does structural damage if that's what you mean. More than anything certain people are more prone to it so get recurrent infections. It does go away in between but is easily started again.
