My son has been on ProEfa since March, although it was not his

miracle drug to talk, he is still non-verbal, it has helped him

behavioral wise. Anyways he is being put under to get some dental

work done on Sept. 10th. They will use local anesthia (not sure how

to spell), I remember reading past post that you should stop ProEFA

for a certain amount of time before surgery. He is not getting

surgery, but will be put under. Does the same thing apply in this

case, and how many weeks do they need to be off of it before the

procedure. As Sept 10th is approaching soon, if someone can get back

to me with the specifics. I do not want to do anything to make my

son worse then he is.

Also, my son starts special ed preschool in Nov. He has not had his

MMR, last DTP or Chicken Pox vaccine because I have held off because

he started having seizures after his third set of shots, and I am

afraid it will happen again. Does anyone know if there is a waiver I

can sign or how I get around the school system, or do I have to get

them done?

Michele,

You don't have to get the vaccinations. Each state has a form of exemption. Go

to http://www.access1.net/via/STATES/allstates.htm to find your state and the

applicable form. You can also get a Physician to sign a medical waiver based on

the prior bad reaction (seizures) and/or you can have a titers test (?) not sure

exactly what it is called but the doctor will know - in any event it is a test

to determine if your child even needs a booster (i.e. do they already have

sufficient antibodies to render them immune without an additional booster). KIM

In some states the shots being completely up to date are not mandatory until

they start kindergarten. My son was in the PreK program in FL & was due for

his MMR & DPT. I was afraid I would have to hurry up & catch him up, when I

had planned on waiting & spacing them out. Lucky for us that we were able

to postpone until this year on entering kindergarten. Although I have since

gotten a waiver for him, still unsure about all the things I am reading.

Call your school or health dept. & see what you can find out in your state.

Please please research the vaccines you are considering. Especially

after the experience you have had with them already.

Each state does have waivers so it depends on your state. Check the

link that someone posted for you earlier.

There are several very good loops on that address these

concerns.

Let me know if you would like me to send you the links to the ones I

am on.

If you live in NJ, the DPaT and MMR is given to 4 to 6 year olds so you have

until 6 to receive this shot. If you wait until 7, your child only needs the

DT. Also, you may want to take a titer at the age of 6 to check your child for

measles immunity. Since there was a breakout in 1991-1993 our lifetime MMR shot

was no longer good enough, but the schools in NJ have been accepting blood

titers showing immunity for the measles. They are not concerned with rubella or

mumps b/c they feel the diseases are not that critical as measles. The Chicken

Pox Vaccine is a choice. You may choose to delay this vaccine until your child

reaches adolescence and still has not gotten the illness.

Check with your pediatrician to verify your state requirements. If you have the

window of opportunity to get shots between 4 to 6 you have until the childs 6th

birthday to get the shots.

Michele,

I just heard about another website that has information on each state's laws re:

vaccine policies as well as other vaccine-related information. It is

the start of school she will not be able to attend. she will not be five until

The school told me the same, but I had my pediatrician write a note stating he

would be receiving his boosters on his 6th birthday and if needed a blood titer

test would show he was still immuned from his shots given at 2 years old. No one

can force a child to be vaccinated at 4 if the state guideline states between

the ages of 4 to 6.
