I had gestational diabetes with my son (first born) that went undiagnosed as

well. He weighed 10 lbs. 10 ounces! With my daughter, they caught the diabetes

(late onset again). I passed the sugar test at 28 weeks (?) with both

pregnancies. I was put on insulin at 32 weeks gestation with my daughter and put

on a special diet. My daughter's hypotonia and speech delay are much, much

milder than my son's. EIP thought she had some sensory issues, but I don't

believe so (although my son definitely does). Maybe there is something to the

gestational diabetes thing. Both my children had severe jaundice as well. My

son was kept in the hospital an additional 3 days under bili-lights and my

daughter was sent home with bili-lights. KIM

I had severe gestational diabetes with both my kids. However with my

son who has apraxia and low tone it was diagnosed much later when

they do that liquid test. That was probably in the 22nd week or so.

What all expectant Moms should know is that the urine stick test is

so not accurate as your sugars would have to be totally out there to

show up.

With my daughter who is totally typical I started testing my levels

at about 8 weeks and by 12 weeks was on insulin. The levels also

stayed stable where as with my son with a 99% perfect diet they

continued to rise and I was eventually on bed rest due to unexplained

bleeding at 32 weeks.

Both kids were fine after delivery and were monitored as well in the

NICU. All this leads me to think that the delayed treatment with my

son resulted in his issues. I also have a cousin who had gestational

diabetes as well. Her son is now 2 with global hypotonia. He hasn't

been diagnosed with apraxia just yet, but we expect he will be. She

just started him on Pro-efa and has seen amaxing results in the first

2 weeks with focus and receptive language. All is therapists have

commented on the changes.

I think we all would love to know the cause but more importantly the

treatment and therapy to overcome these obstacles is what is

important.

for IV therapy for 48 hours. I'm curious if there's a connection

My new OBGYN doctor thinks I had undiagnosed gestational diabetes too. I had a

lot of amniotic fluid, pre-term labor started at 28 weeks, but passed by sugar

test at 28 weeks. But my son was always measuring big, he was born five weeks

early and weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces. So this new doctor said they will make me

take the 3 hour test, regardless of the 1 hour test results. That is if I can

ever get pregnant again, seems to be taking a lot longer second time around.

I had borderline gestational diabetes but the Dr. said just make sure I was

careful about what I ate. My son is apraxic, had some hyper as well as

hypotonia, Sensory Integrative Disorder and was severely jaundiced at birth

too????

This is really peaking my interest. My blood sugar was over 200 when Jordan was

born. He also had mild jaundice, we had the Wallabee blanket here for 3 days.

His hypotonia is mild (the pediatrician still hasnt picked up on it, however the

neuro did). His apraxia is also mild (today he said " Mom I want the Hawaiian

Punch Juice Box please " ) I can't tell you how thrilled I am with his progress.

But there are still motor planning things, and the SI stuff....

Took me 10 years the third time around...he was 10 lbs, 13 ozs (I took the 3

hour test, the doctor " forgot " to read the results).....

He was worth every minute of the wait...he is my angel child...

Any one else who has this to share, I'd be interested in knowing..

I find this topic interesting. I had 4 children and gestational diabetes

for all 4 (smallest child was 9lbs 1/2 oz and he was the first...the last

was 11 1/2 lbs) only two of the children have any issues with motor

planning of any sort, language or what may have been or is hypotonia and one

of those two had mild jaundice and those two were both forcep deliveries

that were done improperly (grabbed at the temples) the other two had no

issues of any kind, in fact the 11 1/2 lb baby is gifted.

I did not have any problems with either of my two pregnancies with gestational

diabetes. My second one, I was very swollen and had pre-eclampsia and my blood

pressure wasn't great.

My sugars were fine.

I had 2 boys, 10 lbs, 13 ozs, at 38 weeks, my daughter was 10 lbs 12 ozs at 37

weeks. <sigh> My daughter, I believe, has SID, and hypotonia. She stuttered

until she was 6, and still now speaks at times unintelligibly (I thought because

she spoke so FAST)....All of my children have ADHD.

During the pregnancy with my little guy, I KNOW I had diabetes, due to his stay

in the NICU and his apgar of 5 at birth. (floppy baby). He moved around A LOT

in utero, ..as did all my children. I have many questions at this point in my

life...and I';m sorry I was VERY unaware of many things.....

My daughter still has mild SID, the clothing tags, etc. Still trips and falls,

lol...(all the years of dancing lessons did nothing)....my oldest when I look

back, clearly had apraxia (again missed), however whatever happened, it's

resolved. The little guy is my focus now.... but I think this is a big thought

for any pregnant mom....is there a connection with gestational diabetes?

Something for our researchers out there lurking, maybe????

My daughter did not have much fetal movement either. They had me coming in

every 3 days for a non-stress test which she would fail (no accelerations after

fetal movement coupled with not enough movements with the 20-30 minute time

frame, etc.). I remember they would put that buzzer on my stomach to try and

jolt her into moving and nothing... They would send me straight into the

ultrasound room for a stress test (score 1-10, one being bad, ten being good).

One time she was a four, a nurse drove me to the hospital for a C-Section, an

amnio showed her lungs weren't developed, they stabilized me (and her) and sent

me home. On the day she was delivered, she scored a " 2 " !!!! I was terrified of

losing her. I was also laying on my left side every two hours (I think) and

doing fetal kick counts at home. Very scary time. My daughter has hypotonia

and speech delay with some sensory issues based on the EIP evaluation at 17

months of age. With my son, the diabetes went undiagnosed. It was my first

pregnancy so as far as frequency of fetal movement...it seemed normal to me at

the time. He was 10 lbs. 10 oz. but wasn't in NICU. He did have a bad case of

jaundice however. He has been diagnosed with Oral/Motor Apraxia (Dyspraxia);

Hypotonia; Sensory Integration Disorder; and PDD-NOS...

For neither of my pregnancies, was there much fetal movement. With my first, we

went once a week because I didn't feel him. He was delivered by c-section. His

development was normal. For my second pregnancy, I just figured, my babies

don't move much. But with this pregnancy not only were there no movements, I

blew up like a balloon-blood pressure was elevated, etc. They had so much

trouble even hearing his heartbeat. I was always concerned that because of all

this, there might be a problem. I was told by all the medical professionals

" no " . Well, Mark does have some problems and issues. I'm just grateful that

it's being dealt with.

Your right, with gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, researchers

really should be tracking these pregnancies and early development. They could

help so many children real early and start educating and training the parent.

Anyone know who to contact about this?
