Guest guest
My son is 2 1/2 and low tone, dyspraxia. He can blow but will not suck from a straw. Any ideas? We have tried short straws, long straws, hard straws, the sip tip straw...nothing...he just chews it. We have SP every week and she has been trying but not really getting anywhere either. Guest guest
Okay, I do have a very good suggestion for this one. It was very hard to teach my apraxic daughter to use a straw also. Well, you use juice boxes. When you put the straw in their mouth, you squeeze the box. They get the idea that they are supposed to drink from it. Then you keep doing the same thing, but not squeezing so hard. Once they figure out and start sucking, you can make the juice go up part of the way in the straw, and then finally, they figure out how to get the juice themselves. Hope this helps. > My son is 2 1/2 and low tone, dyspraxia. He can blow but will not > suck from a straw. Any ideas? Guest guest
I would recommend using the honey bear straw cup.....it is in Sara R 's catalog....Innovative Therapists International www.oromotorsp.com You can squeeze the bear to assist him with getting the liquid out of the straw....and gradually back off the assistance as he can draw more liquid out on his own. Email me if you have more specific questions. I would be glad to help. Barbara A. , M.S.,CCC-SLP Speech-Language Pathologist Help Me Speak Stampin'Up! Guest guest
This one seems to be working for our son. His OT has been working with him at the end of his session now twice for about 10 minutes and he's starting to get the hang of it. I tried and tried and she seems to be having more luck than I did. I just went to the grocery store and bought the bear that hones comes in and saved it in a jar. The straws I just cut to a low length so that they don't hit the roof of his mouth. Hope you have success. The bear character gives you an opportunity to make it fun for them too. Lynn
Guest guest
I taught my son to drink from a straw by taking the straw out, while holding some liquid in it, putting it in his mouth, and then letting it into his mouth once he was " latched " ; we did this a lot, and then he would try to suck more out at the end. Not a formal technique, but it worked! karen [ ] drinking from a straw??? My son is 2 1/2 and low tone, dyspraxia. He can blow but will not suck from a straw. Any ideas? Guest guest
When was that age, he learned how to use the straw with the Capri Sun straws. They are really small and thin and very easy to suck from. We also used the playtex straw cups. Hope this helps-
Guest guest
We have been working on this for over a year now. He will not suck from the straw at all and we have used the honey bear bottle method and also juice boxes. Those are actually the 2 things we started off with. Right now I put my finger over the tip and let him drink from the end. If you keep your finger over the end he doesnt suck but chews it and with the stiffer staws that don't collapse he gives up. With the juice box he knows to squeeze it and doesn't have to suck. We put a cover on the boxes so he couldnt squeeze it and that still doesnt work. I'm frustrated to no end because I thought that him drinking from the Drink Up cup was okay, and then I read that its not....... Amy
Guest guest
My son has very severe oral apraxia, at age 11 or 12 months I had him drinking out of a straw. I would put the straw in the liquid, hold the end, and place it is his mouth, try to get him to round his lips around the straw and let a little trickle in at a time. This took a few months but all the therapist are amazed he has been able to drink from a straw this long. He is now 3 yrs 7 months and didn't blow out candles until his third birthday and has just recently learned to blow through a straw and blow cotton balls across the floor. Another new thing is that he has FINALLY Learned to lick a sucker. Good luck Daphne

Guest guest
rubbermaid also makes a great one with a flip top straw built in. it's hard to squeeze to get liquid up, so that may help some of you. lori
