Guest guest
Hi ! I don't understand enough about carnosine and how it's helping in the body to speak with any authority on this. As far as I know the only medical expert on the carnosine is Dr. Chez, and some of his patients are part of this group -I would call him. We don't get much feedback here on the carnosine as we do the fish oils -and what we've heard is mostly great (or no change) We've heard no negative. I can tell you my own observations in Tanner -which so far nobody else reported to find the same. Up till now -what Tanner has gone through in the EFAs is fairly typical of the norm. I found that Tanner had an increase in imaginative speech and play on the carn aware and the carnosine. After a few months I noticed a slight regression in his speech, more stuttering and hesitation -so I tried stopping the carnosine and noticed a surge which shocked me as I reported here and you probably recall. However a short time after that, about a few weeks to a month or so later we noticed a slight regression again -so I tried to put him back on again - and another surge. What's interesting to note -not sure if others found the same -I found that some days Tanner wants to take the carnosine (which we nicknamed " magic powder " to go with the " magic fish oil " ) -and some days he refuses the carnosine " No! " where the fish oil he wants each day for some reason. I don't know if Tanner's body knows something I don't. Due to this I give Tanner carnosine on an inconsistent basis -and have found that to be the best. On for a few months -and then off for a few weeks. =====
Guest guest
I've researched Carn-Aware and here are some of the benefits reported: CARN-AWARE may improve receptive language, auditory processing, socialization, awareness of surroundings, and even help fine motor planning and expressive language. Responses usually take 1-8 weeks into treatment. Improved seizure control in some epileptics. Gains in cognitive domains including language, alertness, energy levels, and even gross motor ability. Expressive language was described as more fluent, eye contact more frequent, and interest in the environment was more prominent. Parents reported benefits in their children after as few as two weeks in the areas of socialization, expressive language, and adaptaption to change. Most, if not all of this, I got from www.carn-aware.com [ ] Carna-aware Remembered hearing about this some time ago and every now and then people bring it up. What is the primary use? Has anyone found it to improve processing, sentence structure, etc... or just speech. Is the standard dosage 200 mg? Are there any side effects? How long does it take to work or not work. I remember you saying you took Tanner off. Did you resume? As you can see I have lots of questions!! Thanks. Mom to 5 with verbal apraxia, and low tone and on the fence with processing. Guest guest
, I hope this dosn't sound stupid but I thought the carnaware was carnosine. So should I try the carnosine? See so much to learn. Should I stop the carnaware for a while and and try the carnosine 1st then up the epa or what? I just need your opinion. I will try whatever you suggest. Please help me , I really want some improvement before the summer is over. So now is when I'd really like to experiment. Plus I see him all day. Thank you so much. Also where do I get the carnosine powder>> Pam
Guest guest
Hi Pam! Carn-aware is Dr. Chez's formula -and the website that Kim gave out http://www.carn-aware.com is the one with the information about this. Carn-aware is carnosine with some added ingredients like zinc. " CARN-AWARE is a nutritional supplement consisting of L-Carnosine, Zinc, and Vitamin E. This product was developed by Dr. Chez. Research suggests CARN-AWARE may be beneficial in patients who have been diagnosed with or who show signs and symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders and/or epilepsy. Physician consultation is always recommended with the use of any supplement. " Most common Q and A's are here http://www.carn-aware.com/faq.html I was told that http://www.beyond-a-century.com is the cheapest source for pure carnosine powder -and it's a good quality powder I was told this by one of the board members of Cure Autism Now. Since the primary ingredient for carn-aware is carnosine I tried pure carnosine powder instead because the carn-aware was a bit pricey. It was also suggested here awhile back to mix the pure carnosine powder with the carn-aware. I have the early results about Tanner on carnosine posted here http://www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/carnosine.html I have since found carnosine capsules at the mall which I have tried too -and I really don't notice any difference between the powders like I do with the EFA oils. I'm sure that Dr. Chez can only stand behind carn-aware because that is the only brand/formula that is researched. As a parent -I tried carn-aware first for a few months -and then tried the pure (less expensive) carnosine powder. Perhaps other can try this and post if they notice any changes. I give each change a few months -so try to decide between the carnosine or the higher EPA -or you may not really know which is helping more. My vote is starting with trying the higher EPA -but it's up to you (and the MD) =====
Guest guest
, What is the suggested starting dosage of Carn-Aware for a 3 1/2 year old? Also, how much carnozine powder do you get with the http://www.beyond-a-century.com? How much of that powder equals a 200 mg capsule of Carn-Aware? If a child is taking a multi-vitamin already, is there any chance of a vitamin overdose with the zinc and vitamin E that's in it? Guest guest
Pam- Carn-aware and Carnosine are the same thing. the only difference is that it is in the purest form and it has zinc and E added where Carnosine doesn't. We tried to use just the carnosine but found it to be the same price once you added the zinc and E. It is pricey but it is well worth it. Sedona has been on it for 10 months and she started to talk 2 weeks into the program. She had no speech or comp prior to the Carn-aware. -- [ ] Re: Carna-aware , I hope this dosn't sound stupid but I thought the carnaware was carnosine. So should I try the carnosine? Guest guest
I can't say I have true scientific evidence but here's our experience....as background, Ellie (now 3 yrs) has been on EFA's for ~ 8 months. We saw a surge in verbal expression starting about 3 months in, and progress has been steady ever since. We've gone from 1 proEFA, to 2 proEFAs, to now 1 proEFA and 1 proEPA. Three different times I've tried to add Carnaware in. Each time I have done it for at least a week, emptying the contents of 2 pills into her juice or milk. (I'll do one for a few days and then start with 2 pills on day 3 or 4). Each time I end up stopping it because her behavior starts to deteriorate....of course I can't prove it's from the Carnaware, but that's my gut reaction. She becomes more defiant and screamy...loses control easier and more tantrums. To me, this behavior goes beyond the 'normal' range of a 2-3 year old and her typical self, so that's why I stop the Carnaware and then bad behavior seems to taper off. I can't say if the Carnaware helped or not with verbal expression...but after 3 attempts and similar behavior issues, I'm putting it on the back burner for now. I'll probably give it another try soon, but it certainly hasn't been the straightforward experience we've had with proEFA/EPA. Hope this helps [ ] Carna-aware > Remembered hearing about this some time ago and every now and then > people bring it up. > > What is the primary use? Guest guest
Hello, My name is Kathy and I have a question about EPA. My daughter Kayla who is five and still nonverbal has been on the Pro-EFA, but had to take her off of it because it caused her to be very hyper. I believe the GLA was to high for her. She was on two a day and then I change her to one a day. She was still too hype and no sign of speech. I know it was the amount of the GLA because once I had her on Eflax and Evening Primrose Oil and she was just off the wall. Also, when I took her off the ProEfa after a while her behavior change. I am trying Kayla on half of ProEfa. Do you think that will help her at all? Also, do you think the ProEpa would help? Kayla is very small in weight so I am wondering if her body just cannot handle to much GLA. Thanks for your response in advance. Guest guest
We noticed an improvement with the carnaware within 2 weeks. We ran out and saw regression within 3 days. We noticed gross motor improvments. motor planning, processing improvment, quality of language and much more articulate. Also, was really picky eater and now he will eat almost anything. He takes 600 mg in am and 400 mg in the pm. ( has been on carnaware for 18 mos)
Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I started my son (33 months old and 37 pounds when we started) on one Pro-EFA per day on April 10th and he was SOOO hyper - a total live wire! I considered stopping too. I posted my concerns to this group and received some encouraging responses from people who had similar experiences. Basically everyone suggested I hang in there b/c the hyper behavior subsides after a few weeks. Everyone explained that it was like waking up parts of the brain that hadn't been 'turned on' before. Like drinking too much coffee for an adult, kind of. Well, it was true and I'm glad I waited. We noticed talking benefits literally the very next day, but I'd say his behavior didn't really settle down until about maybe 4 weeks (possibly 3 you can check the archives) but it continues to improve - better attention, eye contact, imitation, focus, etc... Guest guest
My understanding is that Pro-EPA is a very high doese of EPA. We tried it in addition to Pro-efa and I was not happy. It made him very whiny, unfocused and he started to act different. How about another formula like coromega which doesn't have one of the Omegas? denise > > Hello, > > My name is Kathy and I have a question about EPA.
