THAT I don't know ... sorry! Someone else may be able to enlighten us on

that one. I CAN tell you that Norton came to a screeching halt at

installation when it detected that I had another virus scan running. I had

to uninstall McAfee (which I wasn't happy with anyway), then start the

install again. Also, there were components of McAfee that would not

uninstall, and Norton had to e-mail me a " removal tool " to get it out. It

wasn't until all that was done that I was able to successfully install

Norton. I much prefer Norton BTW. I'll try to find out more and get back

to you.

Hello floradora@... (~Floradora),

In reference to your comment:

è This was part of the info at the top of the message, so I

è guess it was my OE settings maybe that made it

è come through as mime?

Probably, since mime is basically the generic " I don't know what it is " type

file :) This makes me VERY glad that AOL has mail filters on so that we

can't get viruses JUST by opening email :)

Hello floradora@... (~Floradora),

In reference to your comment:

è Well there ya go, I learned something from all this.

Very happy to oblige. :) It's nice to know that monster computer dictionary

I bought came in handy. Every now and then I have to drag it out to check

something, so I guess that makes it worth what I paid for it. I actually

oversimplified the definition of a mime file. It's not only a " I don't know

what it is " but it's the generic, default, if you will, type of file that can

be delivered quickly and easily over the web. It COULD be anything... txt,

doc, gif, etc. The safest bet, though, it if it's a mime..do NOT download

it. Zips and exe files are dangerous as well. A doc file is iffy. Wav,

bmp, jpg and (I think) MP3s are safe and can't harbor sneaky little nasties

that mess up your puter. A txt file is USUALLY safe since the formatting is

replaced with gibberish. Anything else is suspect and should not be

downloaded unless you are REALLY curious, in which case, as I said, download

it to a floppy and then scan the floppy. If you find a virus or trojan, it's

a simple matter to throw the floppy in the garbage. :)

Ok... class dismissed <grin>

Hello floradora@... (~Floradora),

In reference to your comment:

è I don't really understand how it got through.

I was surprised myself when I saw it. It showed up as a txt

attachment, not

a mime, but since I know NMTC doesn't allow attachments, I

didn't download

it, figuring it was not a good thing.

I wonder if it didn't actually come through the list, but

was sent directly

to people at their private addresses, but was put in

the subject line

to make it look like it came through the list.

Anyway, I've said it before, and it bears repeating... DO

NOT download

attachments to emails unless you are positive you know what

they are.. Even

then it would be safer to download to a floppy and run a

virus scan on the

floppy ... you can always throw the floppy in the trash

(they aren't that

expensive) and save your computer :)

I think you're right Jan...I didn't get it.

In reference to your comment:

è Those who got it - was it to the list or to individuals on

è the list?

There wasn't any To: at the top of the email so I checked the return path at

the bottom of the email, and apparently it was sent individually just as I

suspected with NMTC in the subject line to make it LOOK like it came through

the list.

I don't know if this will make anyone feel any better or not, but I DID get

the message.

Which is strange, because the school has some serious virus detection

software and hardware fire walls, assuring that viruses seldom get

through. They are detected and deleted before delivery, and we get a

message saying that the system detected a virus (and incapacitated it) in

an incoming e-mail. Even messages that don't get scanned and culled by the

Yahoo! software get the " third degree " from the school software/hardware.

So, I called the system administrator to get his opinion on the

message. The version I received is one long code, not an attachment (I use

Eudora because of the vulnerability of Outlook Express). He says that

since it's not an attachment and I didn't have to open the message to read

the code in the preview pane, it's PROBABLY not dangerous--but it should be

deleted and removed from the trash.

Just thought I'd pass that on, for what it's worth.

Valeria, Thank you, thank you, thank you. That is exactly what my situation is,

with the hardware and software firewalls, viruses being incapacitated before

they come through, etc. Unfortunately, we don't have a number to call, just an

e-mail address for virus tracker and not only have I not received an answer from

them, but they haven't even read the e-mail I sent asking if them if I might

have a problem. From all the e-mail that is going around, I was beginning to

get afraid to send any e-mails because I was afraid I was infected. I don't

usually panic about things, but this time I did. So thanks for letting us know

what you found out. I will quit worrying, at least until I hear from our virus

tracker. Thanks again, Margaret

I am now just reading all these virus messages. I too received it as a

regular email with no attachments. It seems to be all kinds of " A " across

and down the page. I wonder too if I should now check my Norton's since

it did not come through as an attachment. I already deleted it but it is

probably sitting in my trash file.

Aliceanne, Don't forget to go to your trash and delete it again, then it will be

completely deleted from your computer. Just a safety precaution which should

always be taken when there is a question of a virus. Margaret
