The Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic (ASAC),

located in Coral Gables, Florida, provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to children and adults to investigate the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purposes of the evaluation are to determine current level of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists, doctoral level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting clinicians from CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that individuals diagnosed with autism and their families are connected to CARD services and supports. State-of-the-art assessment measures, such as the

ADOS and ADI-R are used in ASAC evaluations.

The Curriculum

· Highly individualized, hands on curriculum that is designed to address the specific needs of each participant.

· Class sizes are small with a low student-teacher ratio.

· Focuses on the development of daily living and job readiness skills needed to live as independently as possible.

· Skills are taught both at the camp site and community setting.

· Participants develop their self-esteem and sense of achievement as they master each new skill.

Career Exploration and Job Development

· Participants identify their career interests and abilities, learn how to complete job applications, develop a resume and learn interviewing techniques.

· Participants are taught a variety of job readiness skills, including retail, clerical, food services and computer tasks.

· Participants will receive on-the-job training in a business within the community.

Other Services

· Life Skills – to include money management, meal planning, food preparation, personal and community success.

· Driver’s Education – assistance in the required online Drug & Alcohol Awareness class. Review of Florida driving rules and regulations to prepare for permit exam (to be taken online during the course). *Additional fees for online courses.

· Recreational Skills – practice socialization skills while engaging in a variety of activities.

· Community Integration – participate in weekly Friday field trips.

Section 504 Training

Rosemary Palmer, a special education attorney from Tallahassee, will be presenting a training on

the Nuts and Bolts of Section 504.

According to Ms. Palmer, Section 504 is a law that protects students from discrimination, and their parents, teachers and providers from retaliation. Ms. Palmer will address the people protected under the statute, what Section 504 requires, common school violations of Section 504, the relationship between Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, how Section 504 rights and coverage differ from those protected under IDEA, procedural safeguards, and what to do if you feel that a Section 504 violation has occurred. Ms. Palmer will devote the last hour of her seminar to answering audience questions. Please bring a bagged lunch as we are only taking a 30 minute lunch break so that Ms. Palmer can present as much information as possible. Social Development in Children with High Functioning Autism and Aspergers Syndrome

Researchers are seeking to learn more about the social and emotional development of children with High-functioning Autism & Asperger Syndrome. A major goal of this project is to understand relations between brain activity and social and emotional development.

We are currently recruiting children between the ages of 8-16 years who have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome or High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders. Participation will take place at the University of Miami and children will be awarded up to $120 for their time.

The mission of SFACS is to provide education and services to individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) residing in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We will target students on the lower functioning end of the spectrum, who may have deficits in communication and self-help skills, as well as behavioral challenges, and our students will be on a modified curriculum. The methodologies of Applied Behavioral Analysis will be applied in conjunction with the Miami-Dade County Public School and State of Florida standards in order to provide the most effective individualized educational programs possible.

SFACS will be located at City of Hialeah’s Education Complex at Slade Park.
