Guest guest
Hi, Gretchen In response to your e-mail... Not all public schools are created equal. It really depends on the state and town you live in. I'm surprised you haven't already come to that conclusion just reading the e-mails on this list. Same with services. Some districts are more generous and hire good therpists. Obviously, public schools in wealthier districts have more money to spend and generally have to be more accountable to their " clientele " because the parents in the town are more demanding and have the power to back up their demands i.e. many are lawyers or are professionals with the money to hire lawyers to get what they want. Other school districts don't want to spend the money on quality or quantity. I've heard this from therapists that have actually worked in the public school system before they went into private practice. One OT told me she saw 40 kids a day, often in large groups, and she felt she was not doing the kids any good because she couldn't address their needs under such circumstances. And, she was overworked and burnt out most of the time. As far as private schools... yes, there are private schools that are only for the wealthy and wouldn't want any child that they didn't consider to be " perfect. " But, there are also private schools that will help any child achieve their full potential. They publicize themselves as working with children who just " don't fit in " and learn differently. These are the kids that fall through the cracks in the public school system... they need smaller classes, more individual attention. In my town, there are two first grades with about 23 kids in each class, one teacher. My son could not learn in this environment. Too many distractions. We each know our own kids, and what they need to learn. Unfortunately, our school districts often do not know, and do not necessarily care, especially if it's going to cost them money. IEP's are supposed to be " individualized education plans " but school districts don't have the means to provide individualized education. The public schools are meant to educate the masses ... usually the lowest common denominator. And if your child just somehow doesn't fit the mold... well, then you're in trouble. And, public schools don't have to offer the best education, especially when it comes to our children...the law states they only have to provide an " appropriat " education, however you want to interpret that! ly, I want my child to have the " best " education... same as every other parent. Why do you think most of our elected officials don't send their children to public schools?? Well, there, you got me started !!! ---------- From: grtchnwgnmn@... Subject: [ ] Re: School Services Date: Fri, Jun 7, 2002, 5:40 AM I hope this doesn't offend anyone but usually everyone is good here about stating different opinions.I can't believe that people cannot find any services for their kids who are homeschooled. There are several children in my son's school who are home schooled and go to private schools that get services. The parent has to transport them to and from. I would not even consider a private school because to be honest they cannot handle any child who isn't a " stepford child " and don't really seem to care.I also don't believe in homeschooling but to each his own.My son goes to those " crappy " public schools and is thrieving!! He is reading at grade level and is going to be going to writing lab for second grade.I haven't had a problem with getting a good teacher, they know what he needs. Both his Kindergarten and First Grade teachers were awesome and there were two out of six teachers that I wanted him to have for Second Grade and he got one.I cannot hand pick his teachers so alot of it depends on the opinions of his SLP and OT. I also haven't had to or even considered paying for services everything has been provided for me for FREE!! I wouldn't pay because I know the services our out there. The school has always been willing to work with me and I am nothing but pleased with everything. Sorry I just had to speak my mind.Gretchen
Guest guest
Do the schools get money for your child being in their district? Does your child count in their planning for the district? Just curious. It seem ridiculous that your child isn't covered because of homeschooling. You are still paying for them to go to the public school via your taxes! Lynn [ ] Re: School Services Anyway, each school district in the nation gets to decide if they are going to cover homeschooled and private schooled children. Some districts are and some districts are not.
Guest guest
Hello Gretchen, You are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful group to work with you, unfortunatly that is not the case in most places. My son just turned 3 and I have already had to fight them to give my son what he needs and most importantly what he deserves by law. My expeirence with professionals and schools is that parents have to be on their toes and always 1 step ahead of everything. Know the laws, and make sure the teachers, therapist and schools are doing everything they can to make the child progress. It is not so easy for most parents who are just starting this jouryney. Your expeirence is important to share with parents so they know that not every school is " Bad " but it is also important to tell parents especially ones who are just starting this process to educate themselves on what the schools are required to do. I got my self a parent advocate for that and it was the best thing I ever did. It is also important for parents to not assume that the school is looking out for the child's best interest, but it is great that your son's district seems to be doing that. Just wanted to add my 2 cents!
