I've been reading for days and following each line of thought and from time to

time I've thought maybe I would put in my two cents worth and then I'd think

" maybe not " ...but sooner or later the urge to have my say wins out..grin... so

please forgive me if others have moved on to different topics.....

First...I tried to explain this one other time and wasn't as clear as I could

have been.... the reason I say it again..only because it was hard for me to " get

it " and so I think there may be some others stumbling around trying to

understand...please bear in mind that my word is not " gospel " and I do not

always consider myself 100% right and so if you choose to ignore what I say or

to disagree, please do....

There is much contraversy on carbs, fats and proteins and the role they play in

our lives..the truth is we need all three.... proteins are used by the body for

tissue building and repair...it is true that when eaten, proteins are converted

to amino acids as they are the building blocks of our bodies....but, if we eat

more protein than we need, the excess is not stored as amino acids, it is

convereted to fat and stored in our body....that left over from fat storage is

filtered through the kidneys and flushed from the body.... however, these

substances are not easy on our kidneys and can actually cause damage to them....

We also need certain fats for our brain to work and for other processes

necessary for our body's growth and maintainance....fats that we eat in access

is stored in our body as fat, to be used for energy if we need

it....carbohydrates are the fuel foods that our body needs to do all this body

building and repair and to fuel our daily activities....as long as we eat only

enough carbs to fuel our needs, we don't convert any of them to fat for storage

and we don't gain weight.....

If we don't eat enough carbs to fuel our body's activities, we draw from our fat

storage.... when fats are used for energy, the waste is ketones which builds up

in the system and becomes ketosis....and ketosis is not good for our

kidneys....so if we are not processing the sugars from carbs, we are hungry, our

blood is thick with sugar and since we can't process it, our body starts using

our fat reserves.... and puts more ketones in your blood....the only time your

body will actually burn protein for energy is when your fat stores are used up

and you are still not eating or processing carbs for your usual fuel needs...

I'm sure these fat storage processes were acquired when we didn't always know

when our next meal would be... we foraged for our food and we ate when we found

things to eat....our teeth indicate that we have always had a varied diet...our

proteins and fats may have come from grubs and insects and fish and shellfish

and ggs and such but it was still protein....our acquisition of larger animals

was probably pretty spotty...and I'm sure there were days when food was

scarce..then we needed that fat for energy...but since we were always on the

move, I'm betting the fat deposits were not very big....now, we do not have to

forage for our food and our exercise is less and probably obesity(hate that

word) is a disease of our times....bnut instead of just storing enough fat to

get us by until the next day, our bodies are still working on the theory of

saving our extra energy..but we don't usually need it and so the process

continues day to day because it was once very necessary.

Now there are a lot of other complicated things about body growth and

maintainance.... we need vitamins and minerals and all those different things

like insulin and thyroid hormones and enzymes, etc.. and I'm not even going to

attempt to make a simple explanation...so don't think I think they are not

necessary just because I don't mention them....

And now just a little about the " milk " contraversy...... all those animals that

do not drink milk after infancy do not have a life span long enough to worry

much about calcium and bone loss.... we are living much longer than we used

to...it is my theory(only mine, so don't go thinking I'm stating facts and think

you should do as I do)..just trying to explain why I do as I do...I am 67 and

have osteopenia which is a step before osteoporosis.... I've actually taken care

of elderly female patients who would just be standing still and a hip bone would

fracture because the bone was so thin that it could no longer hold them up....

Now, milk is not only an excellent source of calcium but I think it is

delicious... I also love ice cream, yogurt, cheese...all made from milk and a

big help in keeping my calcium intake up in order to strengthen my bones...I

also am now taking Fosamax to move calcium back into my bones....

calcium is also need for muscle action, including heart muscle.....there is also

the problem with caloric intake and even though I'm content with nonfat milk, I

take calcium supplements, too.... so don't drink milk or drink all you

want..makes no nevermind to me...but next time your feet and legs cramp or if

you fracture a bone because your bones are " thin " ... maybe you will think of

this and wonder..better still, think about it now and take measures to keep your

calcium intake sufficient for your needs...

Guess this is enough " this and that " for now.....

Hi Amber,

There is nothing wrong with discussing herbs in this group. You told someone

to give up their meds and go for herbs only. As I told you, we do not give

medical advice in this group.

I love most of what you said and agree with most of it. I'm 66 and

broke both legs in a horrific fall (similar to what Fidel Castro just

did, if you saw it on TV - I think he broke a knee and an arm). I had a

DEXA test after that fall and discovered I have osteoporosis, but it's

not related to that fall. I'd love to discuss Fosamax with you but I

was chastised for discussing herbs here, so guess I need to keep still.

This has been a total misunderstanding. I never tell anyone to give up

meds! I'm sorry if anyone ever took it that way. I always tell people

to check with their doctors. It's been awhile so I don't remember

exactly what I said but I probably said that other things could work as

well as Rx, e.g flax oil and hawthorn work for some people with high

BP. I'm a prime example of how well natural supplements can work for

SOME people as I'm now totally off heart Rx and doing much better on

herbs and supplements. And I did discuss this with my doctor before

going off Rx as a trial. Natural products don't work for every one,

like my husband for example. I promise to never discuss it again on

this site.
