Don't know if you saw the NY Times article on Soy Milk a few weeks ago. Title

was " Use of Soy For Babies is Focus of Debate " by O'Neil (8/3/99).

Two quotes of interest (and please, read the whole article to get the full

context):

... " A 1997 study found that phytoestrogen levels in babies fed soy formula were

several thousand times higher than in babies who drank breast or cows'

milk....let to concerns that..puberty could be delayed in boys and accelerated

in girls.. "

.... " Iron-fortified cows' milk formula is ranked ahead of soy because the protein

quality seems higher, and premature or low-weight babies do not create bone mass

as quickly on soy milk " said Dr. Baker, chairwoman of the American Academy

of Pediatrics.

Bottom line of the article: The jury is still out, but I thought there might be

implications for young RSS babies.

Wow, Katy. Both of my children were fed soy milk as babies because they

were allergic to milk. I heard about the article but did not really pay

attention until I read your post this evening. Now I have to admit that it

gave me a chill. I guess like anything else, we do what we think is best at

the time. There just was no alternative for Jenna and Max. But this goes

along with our decision to use Humatrope for growth and Zoladex for

supressing puberty. We made the best, educated decision we could at the

time. If there is a bad side effect found later, then we will deal with it

accordingly. Sometimes I wish scientists would leave well enough alone and

let us live with a little less knowledge.

By the way, we are seeing Dr. Harbison on Thursday. I am concerned about

this Zoladex medication. It is really used for prostate cancer. I never

thought to ask her if it would affect Max's fertility. It seems funny to

ask this now about an 11 year old boy, but I am really scared. I guess no

one on this list would know the answer, huh?

Hi Jodi,

No never heard of that until the posting a few days ago.

Also, did you know that Lupron was originally a cancer drug designed to

shrink tumors. It is still used for that and also to shrink fibroids.

Hi Jodi,

Our son was also fed only soy formula for the first 14 months....you never never

know, huh? Anyway, I would take that article with a grain of salt.

Hey, we are going to be in to see Dr. Harbison on Thursday, ourselves! I think

our appointment is at 9:30. What time will you be there? We would love to meet

you and Max.

Hi Jodi,

You're welcome.

However I can't figure out how I put your mind at ease.

Talk to you later.

You put my mind at ease because I was feeling like we should have used

Lupron instead of Zoladex. I was afraid that because it was originally

developed for fighting cancer, it was not good for Max to use. But I have

heard good things about Lupron, also a cancer drug as you pointed out, so I

made the same assumption about Zoladex. Does that make more sense?
