Guest guest
Whether or not the sugar is in good control does not mean an infection cannot set in. While I was in nurse's training, I saw an older lady who had already lost her big toe and the second toe on her right foot due to an ingrown toenail. The doctors had to cut away the flesh with no local as they had to be able to tell where the live tissue started and the dead ended. My instructor for that rotation told me that she would not be surprised if the lady would not lose it clear up to the knee. Diabetes does not cause infections, but it does make us more susceptible to them, and that is why good foot care is essential no matter if it is in good control or not. As far as shoes, I would suggest a good walking shoe, such as Nike (they have wider widths and that's what my foot doctor suggested for me). They are comfortable and they sort of rock your foot back and forth instead of flexing (or at least until they get well worn like mine). Good luck! Guest guest
Your feet are the farthest thing away from the heart and the most likely to have constricted or occluded blood vessels, which cause PN (peripheral neuropathy) and problems with healing, I do believe. Am I right? Guest guest
Wouldn't the surgeon who removed her toe have some advice re shoes to wear? Rockports are fairly pricey, but she can get a wide width in them, and they are very comfortable. I think I would check with the Doctor for his advice on this matter, if I were you. What you are talking about is PVD or Peripheral Vascular Disease. Peripheral Neuropathy is nerve damage mostly to the feet, such as when you can't feel anything with your toes. Guest guest
I wear 's shoes, which I buy in men's sizes. I am also a large person with a wide foot and they make the most comfortable, solid shoe you could ever want to put your foot in. The Air Mover is the one I wear, which also meets the requirements for leather shoes with solid soles in the shipyard I work in. They are expensive but wear incredibly well. You can buy them at http://www.dales-shoes.com/clarksmen.htm and I'm sure other places as well. Anne > SHOES > > My mother is a type 2 diabetic. Guest guest
Thanks for all the information. Her blood sugar levels are keep in check and her doctor said he would help us with the selection of shoes. The problems with the toe started a while back with a small wound of the backside of the toe. It had just about healed when the infection was noticed. We just did not catch it in time to save the toe. My mother is in no pain, the stitches have been removed and she is in good spirits. Guest guest
If you go to a Podiatrist, you can get custom made shoes. I used to wear them. They were 450 dollars in 1980. But, my insurance paid for them. They are wonderful. They cast your feet and then make the shoes.
