Guest guest
If you haven't done so already, I suggest you get DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION and DIABETES FOR DUMMIES. A companion book to the latter is DIABETEIC COOKING FOR DUMMIES, which I do hot have but have heard good things about. Your local bookstore should have both, or you can order from www.amazon.com. Hello from a newbie My name is janeen and I was Dx with diabetes about a year ago. It has been one struggle after another for me. Remembering to take BS and med are quite a struggle for me. I am hoping that I can get some helpful information and ideas to keep me on track. I am also looking for help with meal planning. I was checking out the allrecipes.com web site and they have a meal planner for diabetics. Has any one tried this. Or does any one have another suggestion. Most of the sites I have found have too much fish included in there menu's. I will not eat any fish and would like to opt out of that being selected for my meal. Any suggestions? Guest guest
HI Janeen, When I was first diagnosed I went online and got all sorts of advice about diet and book to buy and web sites to join but I the end its best to ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian and if your insurance does not cover it they may make small payments. In California it's a fee of 100 dollars for a visit and one is usually good.. Many times its free. You can also go on the American Diabetes Associations web site www.diabetes.org <http://www.diabetes.org/> and there you can get books about diet one is called Exchanges for meal planning and it's a nice book for $1.98 or so...but I would go to your doctor first. I have struggled too and am back in control and hope I stay that way. My blood sugars are 120 or less (except when I feel ill) and today they were 130 but I had a cup of mixed starchy veggies, 22 grams worth of carb .sus -----Original Message----- From: Janeen Ortowski My name is janeen and I was Dx with diabetes about a year ago. Guest guest
> My name is janeen and I was Dx with diabetes about a year ago. It > has been one struggle after another for me. I think it's all about finding the diet that's right for you. I was insulin resistant as a diabetic for 20 years, I have PCOS and was very overweight. I tried all sorts of diets for years and never had much hope. And my doctors never held out much hope either. January of last year I finally found the diet that worked like a charm for me. I can pick from a lot of different dishes, some meat, or chicken and some even veggie. I've lost 104 pounds so far, am now off all insulin with normal blood sugar numbers and some of the more unpleasant PCOS symptoms have stopped. Whatever you do, DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED. When we're overweight and diabetic almost every medical report that comes out is depressing and that makes us feel worse and more hopeless. There really is hope out there. Keep looking for the diet that works for you. I found mine and I know you will too! Ade
Guest guest
EXCRESSIVE QUOTING MANUALLY REMOVED BY MODERATOR I do not like it. Never have. I can not stand the smell of it cooking either. I will eat tuna fish or vandcamps breaded filles but only with lots of catcup or mayo. Janeen > Janeen, > > Curious, why won't you eat fish? Guest guest
Well I like to eat most foods. My main favorites are Dairy, red meat, veggies (love potatoes ) Peanut butter, Popcorn. I love to eat a really big meat and potatoes type of dinner. I really only have a few things that I do not like. Fish, Sourcraute, ham (will eat but do not care for it), I also will eat tossed salads as a last resort but would rather eat something other. Before I was Dx I ate a lot of junk food, sugar pop, candybars, loads of popcorn. I really never watched what I ate becuase I didn't have to you know. Thanks janeen -- In diabetes , " CLD " <cld60@e...> wrote: > Janeen, what did you like to eat before your diagnosis?
