Barbara,

Your email hit the nail on the head. I think it really expresses the doubts

that I know my husband and I sometimes feel.

Two perspectives helped to move us to the decision to try GHT:

1) If it was a pill, would we have a problem with it? Probably not. So, the

real issue is not GHT, but the method for delivering the GHT. Once we separated

out the medicine from the needle, the decision was easier. So, we treat the

method of delivery as a separate issue to deal with.

2) We could not imagine a situation 12 years from now, with our son asking us

why we didn't try it.

Anyway, your email really gave a lot of food for thought.....THanks for

expressing those views so well.

Katy

Dennise,

Dr. H. has said nothing to make me scared. It is my own fear that is in the

way. Max is 11 1/2. He is in puberty, although it is supressed for the

most part. He is only 4'5 " . I guess I get discouraged because it seems

inconceivable to me that he will grow over a foot in the next five years.

Dr. H. is still optimistic, though. But I have to admit, I did not push the

issue yesterday because we were more concerned about the surgery. I will

ask her the question on Monday when she visits, or at our next appointment

in May.

Colleen,

I don't know how much help, if at all, I can be on this subject since Ross

only just started GH a few months ago. But I do know that we, rather I,

agonized over this decisoin for several years before I decided it was the

right decision. I was totally against it for a long time! My husband

always knew that GH was what was best for Ross. He grew up as a very small

boy and had problems because of it and feels that he would have had a more

pleasant childhood had he been a bigger boy. His adult height is 5'7 " . He

figures that Ross will have a much harder time than he did because he could

potentially be quite a bit shorter than he was. I relied very heavily on

his opinion because he had grown up small, but I was more concerned about

any potential long-term side effects that GH might cause. From all the

research that we did and questions that we have posed to all our physicians,

I finally feel that GH is a relatively " safe " drug to give to my child. All

drugs have some risks, but from what I gather, as time goes on and more

research is done on GH, the safer it gets. A lot safer now than it was 20

years ago (maybe less?). I only wish I knew how much more height he will

obtain with it than without it. The other thing I am always telling myself

is that we are doing the best for Ross with what we know now and if we

didn't do this, we and he, may regret it later. I couldn't look Ross in the

face if he asked me why we didn't try to give him the chance to be taller!

But, if there's any point when we want to stop it, or if Ross someday wants

to discontinue the shots, we know that we can do that, too. Hope my muddled

opinon helps somewhat!

Jodi,

How much has it increased his growth velocity? Are you pleased with the

results? Are the results what you expected? What do they anticipate his

final height?

Thanks for the info.
