Cheeky, According to the info I got when I started with Lantus three weeks ago, Lantus begins working within the first hour and continues working for 24 hours. You should be okay if you eat something starchy before you go to bed, I would think. F.
Guest guest
Cheeky, can you get glucose tabs where you are? It is more efficient to dose a low with a set amount of glucose (tabs) than guessing, overeating, spiking, going low, etc., etc. If you test the low, you know how much glucose to take. I've overdosed my basal on rare occasions, and just tested when I felt low and ate a tab or two, depending on the test. Got through it with less lows than I thought I'd have, btw. The other thing if you can't get glucose tabs would be life savers, or something with a set, small amount of glucose, so you know how much you're raising your bg's. One glucose tab is 4 carbs, which will raise bg about 20 points. Sorry if this post is too late for you. Cheeky, Remember that with Lantus, there is no peak time. It is pretty much stable throughout the 24 hour period, and also you are supposed to eat something with protein in it when you take it. Painful injection sites are a common side effect with the Lantus too. Here is a link to their site: <A HREF= " http://www.lantus.com/information/home.html " > 24-hour Lantus basal insulin for the treatment of diabetes</A> or <A HREF= " http://www.lantus.com/information/home.html " > http://www.lantus.com/information/home.html</A> . Very informative site. F.

Guest guest
Thank you Barb actually a private endo (supposed to be good but she's very expensive)is bringing glucose tabs from your wallgreens and selling it to patients who want them! it costs about $3.75 which is probably the price in usa. i bought 2 tubes just in case have already used it a few times. but my hypo prob is i have no symtoms and will drift off in my sleep which i know is dangerous last night i was particularly petrified bec. my husb was away for 5 days and my kids sleep in their own room so if i didn't wake up nobody would know until a bit too late. but anyway all seems to be well. I had higher expectations of lantus now with reading of 200 fasting i guess the numbers need to be adjusted all over again. I am seeing 2 endo's simultaneously the private one and the lantus lady I hope after so much intense diabtese time i come out of this positively though the private endo said eating no starch was stupid....thank you very much i told her i would lend her DR B's book then she can tell me what she thinks. but all these supposedly Good drs are too busy to read non medical data backed literature. but since i pay per visit i can argue my way through sighhhhhh! cheeky _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

Good :-) > I had higher > expectations of lantus now with reading of 200 fasting i guess the numbers > need to be adjusted all over again. **I remember when Lantus came out (not long ago) and a few folks on this list reported that it didn't last for 24 hours for them - more like 18 or so. I'm thinking Vicki was one, so maybe she'll chime in here. You may benefit by testing frequently toward the end of the 24 hour period and see if this is true for you. I never tried it because of those reports, just stuck with my UL. And I prefer basal dosing twice per day, because actually my a.m. and p.m. doses vary a little, depending on what's going on. After a year or so of tweaking my fastings are consistently under 100 and I know a nighttime one unit variance up or down will vary by fasting bg approximately 20 points. > I am seeing 2 endo's simultaneously the private one and the lantus lady I > hope after so much intense diabtese time i come out of this positively > though the private endo said eating no starch was stupid.... **IMHO, Cheeky, if you're eating lots of low glycemic green vegetables until you get your numbers where you want them, you should be fine. If you want the bigger jars of glucose tabs, I'd be glad to mail you some. They last alot longer than the tubes, and sometimes I'll take one before an exercise period, if I'm under 100. Email me privately, if you're interested, and you think we can work that out. Don't know about customs and all where you are. Guest guest
Cheeky, maybe this is a sign that you need to increase your Lantus. If you read the pamphlet that comes with the package, as I recall, it says you can increase one unit at a time if you're using less than 10, and 2 units at a time if you're using more than 10 units. It also says to try each increase for 3 days or so, testing frequently, before you increase it again. It said pretty much the same thing in the books I read at the time about insulin, when I was going through switching insulin kinds and tweaking my dosages, which I pretty much did all by myself with lots of help from some of the members of this list (few years ago now). If you ever get some time, you might try the archives 2-3 years ago for this list and do a search for my email address. I've always been pretty good about changing the subject line, so it might be at least a little easier than it sounds. There is alot of great info in there. Also, if you think it would help, I probably have some of the posts saved in my personal archives (and maybe not). Email me privately, if you like, and I'll see what I've got. Take care, Barb > i am testing regularly and surprisingly they are all high so !! 200, > 210,fasting and prelunch i'll keep testing and watch out. i found the > injection sight a bit painful too. normally i have no problem with needles. > i am supposed to take 12 and took it twice so 24 units thanks cheeky
Guest guest
thank you barb you bet bigger container would be more convenient. my brother will be in usa soon he has a medical confrence somewhere out there so i'll get him to get me a container. i will also visit sometime in july/aug so now have one more thing to bring back. i am using R with lantus as my hosp supplies that free or i have to buy humolog for twice the price, the dr prescribed just R for fast action. i have a bottle of H but now its a month old i'll just chuck it away. aren't both R and H the same price in usa? cheeky _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
