Guest guest
I will look into the higher ketones. I don't know. It is possible. Will have to check. She is continuing to be more alert and happy though. I have a BHB monitor, but I can't yet justify the cost of the strips. Are you getting help to pay for them? Prescription? Other? Guest guest
Yes getting prescrip for the bhb strips - not quite sure but I think we are going to get enough for two tests/day (that was my request) as my son due to his meds is only voiding once a day and we are trying to fine tune the diet and finding it difficult when I can only test ketones at 8pm. Also, I am hoping to test ketones after tc seizures (he has these infrequently now but still around 6am when they do come) and there is no way I can get him to go to the bathroom after a seizure. Guest guest
I am going to ask my neuro for a prescription then. What exactly do you ask for? The strips by manufacturer? Who helps you with this? Nurse, doctor, dietician? Other? Thanks, Bill heppner1@... wrote: > > Yes getting prescrip for the bhb strips - not quite sure but I think we > are going to get enough for two tests/day (that was my request) as my > son due to his meds is only voiding once a day and we are trying to fine > tune the diet and finding it difficult when I can only test ketones at > 8pm. Guest guest
I asked for precision blood ketone testing strips. (For the precision xtra machine) I havent checked to see if it went thru or not tho - will check with the pharmacy tomorrow. HTH Jenn P.S. do you have a prescrip for the MCT oil as well? Guest guest
Oops forgot to answer - I talked to the neurology nurse clinician who passed the request on to the neuro who called in the prescrip. Guest guest
A BHB monitor tests for beta hydroxybuterate - or blood ketones. Mine tests both blood ketones and blood glucose but you need to calibrate it for either and use different strips for the different tests. HTH Jenn SJVC5@... wrote: > <PRE>what is a BHB monitor??? MCTs (medium chain triglycerides)...are usedfor patients with liver damage because, unlike long-chain fatty acids, they require little liver involvement for their metabolism. During digestion, they are absorbed directly into the bloodstream rather than into lymphatics, and go directly to our cells rather than first to our liver. They lower cholesterol slightly. They are more water soluable than long chain saturated fatty acids. They require less lecithin and bile salts for digestion. MCTs are useful in conditions where fat malabsorption is a problem, or in conditions where liver function is impaired. Athletes use MCTs- about one tbsp - as a source of energy before a workout. The oil has a light coconut flavor, but can produce a scratchy sensation at the back of the throat. More than 2 tbsp may produce stomach discomfort. An excess can cause ketosis. An excess ties up albumin protein that is necessary for other transport functions in our blood, such as carrying vit E, amino acids, and other substances. They carry neither EFAs nor other essential nutrients. Flaxseed oil is the richest source of alpha-linolenic acid, which is rare in our foods. It also contains protein, minerals, and vitamins. It is a rich source of mucilage and fiber, which helps the body eliminate cholesterol, and help prevent reabsorption oftoxic wastes from the large intestine. Flax is also the richest known source of lignans, which have anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. Its oil is used in natural programs for the reversal of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, premenstrual syundrome, inflammatory conditions, arthritis , etc. (caution...oil and seeds should be fresh as is possible...and refrigerated..tasting will tell...rancid tastes are obvious. We buy seeds from tha health food store and grind them up in a spice grinder...they are sort of nutty flavored...can be put in anything...we also use the organic oil. These oils spoil in a short time...they can be frozen. It must be fresh, not be exposed to light, oxygen, and heat...fresh unrefined flax oil contains lecithin and other phospholipids that help emulsify fats and oils...the diet should include vit B3,B6,and C and the minerals magnesium and zinc.. The seed is better than the oil, and the seed is enriched with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Magnesium-rich chlorophyll is found in unrefined green oils such as olive, hemp, pumpkin, and avacado. Olive oil (unrefined, virgin) protects the arteries rather than damaging them. " Extra virgin " means the highest quality. It improves brain function and maturation. It can reduce bad " LDL " cholesterol. It favors bile secretion, which improves the elimination of toxic end products of liver detoxification and improves digestion of fat. It increases good cholesterol (HDL). There is much more positive info about unrefined olive oil... but I have gone on too long. I would be happy to look up anything I can for you...or anyone...it helps me help my wonderful daughter and her wonderful daughter. With hope, diane ake, grandmother to Kiara,2, IS, CPI, EP, CP, dev del soon to be a keto kid. so vit and min supplements are so important... It keeps out colon swept and moving. It is necessary for intestine and colon healthl It feeds and maintains a healthy intestinal flora make up of friendly little bacteria and yeasts that make some of our vitamins and protect us from unfriendly intestinal bugs. A healthy colon minimizes release of toxins back into our blood. It also lowers blood cholesterol, because it prevents cholesterol and bile acids from being reabsorbed into our body from our intestine. Cholesterol and bile acids attacjh to fiber, and are carried out of our body into the toilet with solid wastes. Fiber softens stools, prevents constipation, and maintains regularity. Flax is an excellent source of fiber..(need fluids tho...with). Flax is 12% mucilage and makes flax seeds the best natural laxative available. This soft, water- soluable kind of fiber soothes and protects delicate stomach and intestinal lining, prevents irritation, and keeps the contents moving smoothly along. It absorbs water and swells to about 20 times its dry volume ...( therefore, 5 times the volume of the flas being eaten, as fluid, should accompany its consumption). It has no side effects. Flax mucilage also has the ability to buffer excess acid. This makes it ideal for people with acid or sensitive stomachs, ulcers, and inflammmatory conditions fo any part of the intestine. It lowers elevated cholesterol by preventing reabsorption of bile acids, and decreases absorption of cholesterol from foods, increasing the amount of cholesterol excreted. Mucilage helps stabilize and modulate blood glucose, which is useful in diabetes and hypoglycemia....Mucilage is perfect food for beneficial bacteria in our colon, helping them keep bad intestinal 'bugs' under control. Flas has minerals and vits and lignans. Kiara has digestive problems anyway so we use flax oil and ground seeds. I hope this is of some help. Many people on high protein diets have constipation. Okra is a good source of fiber..(1/2 cup = 80mg) ...carbs= 5.768... oils soften protein hardened foods... Too little water...body drags the water it needs out of our intestinal tract. see: www.florainc.com
