Sorry, but I don't buy " it's most likely the insulin " . I never gained weight on

insulin, even after starting, in fact I've lost weight.

Weight is gained by eating.

In fact, on the subject of weight: yesterday the wife and I went to a chinese

buffet, but we got there too early so we ordered from the menu.

We were about 1/2 way through eating, and two " morbidly obese " women came in.

They went up to the buffet and came back with two plates full each, and eating

while waddling (because they were so fat they couldn't come close to walking a

straight line).

Before we finished our meal, they both went up for two more plates each which

were again filled. Upon leaving, I noted their car which was parked next to mine

with a handicapped sticker.. I know what the handicap is.

This will probably upset some here, but that's what I saw and I'm sticking to my

story as I feel it needs telling.

Dave, thanks for the story about the " handicapped " women who can't stop

eating. It made me cringe wondering what people thought about me, a year

ago eating cheeseburger, fries, etc., at a little over 200 lbs. Now I'm

thinking, but for the grace of God and the advent of diabetes I'd still be

going on that way. Now, 50 lbs. gone and 20 to go, I'm quite happy with 30

grams of carb/day. I need to see those people, and I do, in the grocery

store, restaurants, my neighbor, etc., because I need the reminder. I guess

if finally getting the Db dx'd was the wake-up call I needed it can't be all

bad. I really *looked* in the mirror the other day and realized I know that

woman, I remember her - then went to Nordstrom and bought clothes and

jewelry and went broke, but I don't spend any money on ice cream anymore.

Thinner is way more fun.

I'm another heavy weight who found your story a little upsetting. On a

list where weight is a problem, diet is discussed, and I am trying my best,

walking two miles a day (I don't think I " waddle " but maybe to you I

would.) Its hard to take it off, a daily struggle, and there are lots of

us, lots of us on this list. Perhaps many are lurkers, but they are there.

My mother used to often say " Judge not your brother until you have walked

in his mocassins for two moons. "

She claimed it was a native American saying, but it bears thinking about

when you are busy judging other people and what they are doing.

A little compassion please,

I've heard a variant: " Don't criticize anyone until you've walked a mile in his

shoes; he'll be a mile away and barefoot. "

I know you surely don't believe it, but I have a whole lot of compassion for

those who truly work to overcome their situation, but there is absolutely no

excuse for the way those women acted. They are eating themselves to death, and

enjoying the ride.

I guess I am also one of those who would not allow myself to get in a positon to

have to wear those mocassins.

I guess it was pretty stark, and right out there, but that's what I saw, and it

affected both my wife and myself. I also don't think it has anything to do about

the way people love and respect you, because if they do love you then they feel

very bad that you are having a hard time.

Of course there are very many who are happy to be where they are also.

Weight is gained by eating.>>

So you're saying that I gained 12 pounds in 6 days because I ate too much?!?

I don't think so!

In fact, I was eating less than usual trying to conserve money while out of

town (more to play on - we went to Las Vegas, lol).

I'm very glad that you've lost weight while on insulin - that's great! I

have started losing a little weight now too, but it was just that first week

- when I swelled up like a blow fish lol!

In a recent interview I saw on TV Dr Atkins said he eats Cheeseburgers -

without the bun! - So, now if I'm out that's what I do occassionaly - and

get my Seniors coffee free!

I think that discriminating against the overweight is the only kind of

discrimation that is still legal. What a shame! I am a person who has always

eaten a normal amount of food, less than my skinny best friend and has

always been overweight. I consider this to be a medical problem not a

discipline problem. Yes, I can lose weight and keep it off, but I basically

have to starve myself because my body doesn't work correctly.

We now live in a society where social service takes people's children away

from them because the children are overweight. Why isn't someone trying to

solve the medical problem of obesity?

My skinny friend also goes through the buffet line many times.
