I've been lurking since you all gave me such a warm welcome and good

advice. Just got the results of my first A1c, taken just 2 months

after I was diagnosed on December 10. It was 5.5! My cholesterol is

down significantly, although still a little high, and I've lost 16

pounds.

Thank you, Phyllis. (I can't believe that someone is asking *me* for

advice.) I have to admit that I have no idea what it's down *from,*

because the doctor didn't do an A1c after diagnosis. My bg at the

time of my physical exam was 241.

What have I been doing? Mostly what I've read about here. I am

counting neither carbs nor calories, but I'm eating a hell of a lot

less than I used to. Almost no bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, or

baked goods of any kind.

I work out at the gym, at least 4 times a week and preferably more.

I either walk uphill on the treadmill for at least 2 miles, or I swim

20 - 25 laps. I also take the stairs at work instead of the elevator

a couple of times a day. Today, once the snow has stopped falling,

I'm going to go out and shovel!

Of course, my good results could very well be attributable to the

drugs. 1000 mg Glucophage XR at night and a Metaglip 2.5/250 in the

morning. I'm also taking flaxseed oil, vitamins and magnesium.

I have found that I can get away with a very small amount of ice

cream as an bedtime snack. At first I bought a low-fat, low-sugar

product from Breyers. It tasted like cardboard! As my mother used

to say, " I couldn't wait to finish it so I could never buy it

again. " Now I buy pint-size containers of premium ice cream and

savor that little bit (about a quarter cup) to the fullest. I also

bought a big Cadbury chocolate bar and broke it into individual

squares before storing it in the refrigerator. On any night in which

I have been to the gym and I also get a bg of 100 or less 2 hours

after supper, I let myself have one square.

I usually find that I get my best bg readings after breakfast and my

worst after supper. I don't know if that's because of what I'm

eating, or because the morning medicine is wearing off. Maybe I

should take my evening Glucophage with my supper instead of

waiting 'til bedtime?

Very impressive. You have done alot. Just try the glucophage right after

dinner and see if it makes a difference.
