Subject: Daughter

My daughter was placed in 1st grade this past

year by the principal when we moved to FL from another state. She had already

spent a year in 1st grade in the other state.

She is 2 years older than than her classmates and is a tall, big girl.

She has a high average IQ and learning disabilities.

The principal wants her in 2nd grade this fall.

We want her in 3rd grade. She is embarrassed being in with kids much younger

than her. A special ed teacher in the other state we moved from agrees that she

should be in 3rd grade. The principal won't listen to her.

Her math is great.

She gets her reading classes in ESE.

We've met with the principal and she refuses to move her to 3rd. Her son was

retained and she believes retention is best.

I want to call an IEP meeting but want to make sure I bring up good reasons to

move her.

Any ideas? Thank you for any help.

Maggie

What is the reason the principal is giving ? He/She can't just 'order' your child to repeat a grade with nothing to back it up. Why would they want to report they left a child behind ? It seems quite crazy to me and almost seems like they have no clue that the USDOE frowns on lack of inclusion, frowns on any child not passing a grade, and definitely frowns on districts that demand this with no reason to keep them behind...it doesn't fall into place with wants or needs of any state or federal agency I know of... is this principal on a power trip or do they have something that shows that your child didn't satisfy goals from last year or meet minimal requirements to pass ? She got an " S " (satisfactory) on all of her subjects this past year.

A friend of mine, special needs teacher, was telling me that even if she had

done poorly, she is still not being taught in a least restrictive environment if

she is being taught with much younger children.

My daughter goes to ESE classes for her reading and writing.
