Guest guest
Hi Jenn, I am only 5 weeks post op so I will answer the questions the best I can. Do you have a long incision? No, I had laparascopic gastric bypass, which was 5 small incisions. 4 of them were about 1/4 inch are barely noticeable already. The largest incision is about 1 inch and is beginning to be unnoticeable. My surgeon who also does open gastric bypass surgeries, states that the open incisions are about 3-4 inches. How long were in the hospital? 4 days initially How long were you on bed rest? I was able to move around the day after surgery, but I had planned for a 2 week home recovery. The day before I was to return to work, I became very ill with severe vomiting and abdominal pain. I had to go to the ER and it turned out I had pancreatitis, so I was hospitalized for 2 more weeks and then 1 week home recovery. I just returned to work today. What were you able to eat right away? The first couple of weeks is a liquid diet, so I had chicken broth, strained creamed soups, sugar free popsicles, low sugar juices, jello, sugar/fat free pudding Are you able to eat normal food after awhile? Well, I am at the pureed diet stage in which everything is supposed to be of a consistency to fit through a straw. On the pureed diet I can eat foods low in fat and sugarless. So, I can have meats, beans, vegetables, fruits, etc. as long as they are mushy. After another 3 weeks, I will be able to eat more " normally " just in smaller portions and watch the fat and sugar. Did you have to drink protein shakes and take liquid vitamins? Yes, I am supposed to drink 2 protein shakes a day until I am able to get all of the protein required in through food. I normally only drink one a day. You will be on a multivitamin, calcium, and B12 vitamins for the rest of your life. I have chewables. I would like to find liquid vitamins in the proper dosages. How much did you lose? To date, I have lost 37 pds. If you had to do it over again, knowing what you know, would you? Well, in the early weeks after surgery, I was very regretful of my decision because of all of the complications I have experienced. As time passes and I receive support from this group and others, I am coming closer to accepting the decision I have made. I still worry about other complications I may suffer What can you tell me, good points and bad points of the surgery? I didn't have a problem with the surgery itself. My frustration has been with finding foods my stomach will tolerate and trying to get in all of the required vitamins and water. It's not as easy as you think it is before the surgery. It takes great strength and support to make it through this lifechanging event. Well, I hope I haven't scared you away from the surgery because there are many individuals here who have had relatively few problems. From my understanding, I am among the minority to suffer such complications, but the complications are a possibility.
