Hi Cindi,

I recently heard that most omega capsules were frequently rancid. A

really gross notion since I take them! The nutritionist went on to

say that most oil caps could be eliminated by taking liquid Cod Liver

Oil alone. Do you know if there is any truth to that? Thanks,

Gigi

They are rancid because many people don't refrigerate them. I refrigerate all my cooking oil as well. (olive oil) Sorry I didn't mean to butt in when you directed the question for Cindi but just wanted to share. Kathy

I buy Nordic Naturals --not just for us (I even got Dr Skip to take  them which was like a  miracle in itself) but for my dogs. They have a pet version. My dog Machi has had life time allergy problems. His skin was a mess. A few years ago I put him on very high premium dog food which improve his issues greatly but the EFA's over the last six months has changed his life. so i don't know about rancid-i think that people get a a little crazed-- I  know that I would have a hard time swallowing that stuff straight out of the bottle -ewwwwww.cyndiOn Jun 25, 2006, at 4:01 AM, Kathy Lintzenich wrote:They are rancid because many people don't refrigerate them. Go to Mercola's website. He is big on Carlson's brand Cod Liver Oil (for winter months) and Fish Oil (for summer months). It's not bad in my opinion. But I've tried some really bad stuff! My opinion...Noni Juice is much worse! Thanks Kathy,

Not at all, I appreciate the answer. The nutritionist seemed to

suggest, (though he didn't mention refrigeration), they were usually

rancid from purchase date. He did not say if rancid oils were used in

their manufacture or if it ocurred from method of transport, storage,

or other. Perhaps it is mentioned in his book, I have not purchased yet.

It creeped me out and I began recalling times when I could taste them

all day long, something I no longer experience now that I take the liquid.

I appreciate the mention of refrigeration and will now store my liquid

properly.

Norwegian Cod Liver Oil is what I purchased. I didn't notice it said

" orange flavoured " ....the tase is almost pleasant, not at all the

" orange pukesickle " flavour my mind began to conjure!

Really off topic......Do you think it would help repell my cat's flea

problems. None of the expensive flea meds are working and they are

suffering terribly scratching their fur off! Have not found anything

on line other than these chemicals.

I think the fish oil gelcaps are safe, providing they are not stored in a bright sunny windowsill. I also take vitamin E which is a protective antioxicant. Many fragile oils will include vitamin E or some other antioxidant like rosemary to protect them.

However, I would not take flaxseed oil alone, either from a bottle or in gelcaps. See the work on Johanna Budwig, PhD on this topic please.

butting in is good. I thought that if they were in the gel caps they were safe. I'll have to check into it. all I know is that they are working great for my dogs-an absolute miracle for our Machiavelli and his skin issues and for 8 year old goldens they have very little mobility issues. if I were to take Machi to the vet they would prescribe prednisone. and I think I would have a very ill dog. I don't really know what it does for me -i take a small group of vitamins and I'm not willing to stop my little combination because I feel so good on it.cyndi

thanks for the info. originally I really loved flax-i used a product again for my dogs - and at the beginning it worked great then they started develop allergies. They have no issues with EFAS -only good stuff. The one thing I did look out for is where the stuff came from -- and what kind of quality assurance the company did. and what kind of reputation that they had. I do that at work- we don't have a lot of suppliments but I know the sources and I know the philosophies of the folks that make them. I think its important not only for the rest of us (and my sweet golden boys!) but especially for you guys because of your absorption issues.cyndiOn Jun 26, 2006, at 1:04 PM, foxhillers@... wrote:Cindi I think the fish oil gelcaps are safe, providing they are not stored in a bright sunny windowsill.  I also take vitamin E which is a protective antioxicant.  Many fragile oils will include vitamin E or some other antioxidant like rosemary to protect them. However, I would not take flaxseed oil alone, either from a bottle or in gelcaps.  See the work on Johanna Budwig, PhD on this topic please. mjh"The Basil Book"http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/ .
