Guest guest
Hi Friends, I have had chiari symptoms all of my life, including the nasty headaches that would pop up with straining of any kind. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 34. I had two healthy children when I was 28 and 31. I was very fortunate that my labors were brief. :-) I had natural child birth for both, because I didn't know about the chiari. WACMA does recommend that chiari women having children should have a general anesthesia with c section. There are ways to intubate without hyper extending the neck. I just had my shunt replaced, and they came up with a couple of different ways they could intubate me without hyper extending my neck. It worked great, I didn't even have a sore throat. A scheduled C section is the best way to go with chiari and childbirth. That way there won't be any pressure from the delivery itself. Someone had mentioned an epidural was safe. A few of our members have had onset of symptoms after an epidural and labor. Just the pressure of the baby going through the birth canal causes pressure on the spine and increased icp. If I were to become pregnant again, YIKES, I think I would have someone film the c section for me, that way I could see the birth of my baby. :-) Thinking back on the birth of both of the boys still makes me smile. Hoping the next baby in our life is a grandchild. Kathleen
