weight loss and low carb

I got the " book " and read it. I can't tell you how much info was in there

that I never knew. I have been doing the low carb thing for 5 weeks now with

only a few mess ups. I am eating 1/3 of what I use to eat but have only lost

5 pounds. Could it be my medicine (Avandia - Glucovance) plus blood pressure

medicine or is it maybe my insulin (55 units of lantus per day). I am

getting really discouraged about the lack of weight loss but my bs are

wonderful. Around 90 all the time. I'm checking around 6 times per day

right now. Any comments will be appreciated. I love this list. Sandy

Sandy,

You didn't say what blood pressure medecine you are on, but there are

some, such as Norvasc, that will cause you to retain fluids, which will add

to either weight gain or problems losing weight. One thing you can do is

limit your sodium intake to about 3000 mg a day, and your potasssium to the

same. Limiting the sodium will also help control that blood pressure and

therefor prolong the life of your kidneys.

PS By the way, I just read something in a health mag I get here at home and

new studies show that optimum blood pressure levels are considered LESS than

120/80. Closer to 115/75.

**Sandy, I imagine it's the insulin. Kind of a vicious circle - excess

weight causes insulin resistance, which causes excess insulin in the system,

which stores as fat. Try to increase your exercise and maybe eat a little

less fat. Besides, you don't want to lose weight too fast, because then it

comes back fast as well. Slow and steady is the name of the game here.

It'll come - honest. If you need some inspiration, read the success stories

in our shared files. The link is at the bottom of each message.

Sandy wrote of her discouragement over losing five pounds in five

weeks. Actually, Sandy, a pound a week is good. Allow as much time to

take the weight off as it took to put it on. Even if we ate no food

at all, the most we could lose would be 3-1/2 pounds a week. Yes,

injected insulin can work against weight loss. That may be slowing

you down some. But as you continue losing the weight, there's a good

possibility you can lower your meds, including insuliin. The

Glucovance, because it contains a sulfonylurea, can work against

weight loss by causing strong hunger cravings when it causes

hypoglycemic episodes. You can fight against that by keeping glucose

tablets around and taking those instead of eating when you hypo.
