Hi Amy

I have had a sensitive stomach all my life, and developing upper GI dysfunctions 5 years ago just made things worse. Although I have chronic nausea, I rarely throw up, but there have been a few instances when a food, or more often a supplement, will trigger more severe nausea or even vomiting. I found that 75% of the time my symptoms were caused by one of the supplements I was trying.

You might try looking at the supplements your son is taking first. I had to do lots of trial and error to find ones my body would tolerate, and in a format my body would accept. Although I'm an adult, I take a children's multivitamin -- and only once a week or my body objects. Most of the other supplements I take I mix in water and take with food so my stomach (and immune system) will tolerate them. I give myself regular shots of one supplement (B12) because my stomach and immune system wouldn't tolerate the large oral doses my body needed. I find getting things directly into my bloodstream (injection or IV) is always easier on my stomach and body.

You might be able to get some of your son's supplements in a different form or dosage, and find he might do better if he doesn't take them every day.

A lot of the severe nausea and occasional vomiting with foods were solved by not eating the same things every day. I routinely wait 2 to 4 days between servings of the same food most of the time, even now after 4 years on SCD. Of course there are some legals I've had to stop trying to eat as my stomach and/or immune system reacts badly every time. The one food I miss the most is yogurt; I've had to switch to an acidophilus capsule several times a week.

My upper GI dysfunctions require me to eat low-fiber, low-fat and bland, so I make my food choices (SCD-legal of course) accordingly. Sometimes I'll discover my stomach and upper GI isn't tolerating something I thought would work. There's always some experimenting involved. The good thing is that the longer I'm on SCD the easier and faster my recovery time has become.

My son and I have been on the diet for about 5 weeks and about 3 weeksinto it he started to throw up. The first time was right after eatingsomething. Then it didn't happen again until a few days later and onceagain it was just once. I thought maybe he was coming down withsomething. Then the frequency began to increase with no real pattern. Sometimes first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, sometimesafter eating, sometimes after taking some of the supplements he's on,until it was every day. Most times nothing really comes up he justheaves. I had a period of about 24 hours, about a week after hestarted, where I felt achy all over, sick to my stomach, cold anddiarrhea, but wasn't sure if it was a bug or die-off. Someone suggestedthat it may be too much acidity so I am wondering if anyone else hasexperienced anything like this on the diet or if I need to look at hissupplements. Thanks,Amy
