Guest guest
Hello! Boxing day is a traditional day for which there are many stories about its origin: - tradesman and other people who provide you service during the year- milkman, postman, etc, would come around and you would put money in their collection box as a way of tipping them for their service, or would give them a " box " , usually a hamper type thing. - The money from the poor box, which was filled during Christmas by those attending services, would be distributed during the day after Christmas to the poor and needy. - The Lord of a manor would give those who lived on his land (in his service, really) to provide boxes of goods- cloth grain, etc, to help them. This gift would be a practical gift to those who really had no choice except to live on the land in order to provide income for the Lord, so they were very poor. The gift was not optional- it was their Christmas Stipend or Bonus. My hubby says when he was little, he thought it was the day they threw out all the boxes from the items they had received! Now, if only they could explain why my third bedroom is called a boxroom- when it shouldn't even be called a bedroom because its only 6x8- grumble grumble- even big English homes are small.
