I know that there are enzymes (lactaid, lactase, other) out there to

help lactose-intolerant folks digest milk products, but I don't know

how well they work and if they're approved for this diet. I love both

yogurt and cheese and do not want to give them up, but I also don't

want to continue to compromise my system by feeding it something it

cannot digest.

Nina,

SCD-legal yogurt and cheeses are, by definition, virtually lactose free.

The tablets manufactured that you take after you've consumed something

with lactose were anathema as far as Elaine was concerned. She allowed

marginal use of the liquid drops, in heavy cream, which is low lactose

anyway, but considered that the so-called enzyme-treated milks were too

dangerous because of the strain the large amounts of galactose placed on

the system.

The only approved use of lacteeze would be a few drops in heavy cream

if using a very small amount in coffee.

Nina,The lactose  in legal yogurt and cheese has been consumed by bacterial cultures.Freeze a little yogurt. If you still react it could be casein that you are sensitive to.Hi Folks,I have just been tested for lactose intolerance and came up positive. Nina, I think this is one of the whole points of SCD becasue the legal milk

products are fermented or cultured save regular butter which I understand has

very little lactose according to Elaine, to be lactose or darn near close to it

free...as lactose is one of the sugars to be avoided on SCD, this is why only

properly prepared yogurt and certain cheeses are allowed to be eaten...I think

numerous SCders are lactose intolerant, myself included.

Nina, I am lactose intolerant and tolerate the 28 hour yogurt and aged cheese beautifully. No problem. Good luck! Hi Nina

Like others have responded, most people who are lactose intolerant can handle the 24-hour fermented yogurt and the aged cheeses well, after a certain point in their healing process. However, some cannot.

I'm one who is lactose intolerant but could, initially, handle a very small amount of yogurt regularly but had trouble with cheeses due to a high candida overgrowth so stopped eating cheese. Then I developed a dairy sensitivity (severe joint pain), so stopped the yogurt. When I went back to trying cheeses after two years of candida elimination work I discovered my digestion really couldn't handle them (I have upper GI disorders and poor motility).

So now I'm non-dairy SCD. I don't miss it, as I have plenty of other foods to eat. I don't make any of the recipes calling for yogurt for other digestive reasons anyway, or just leave off the cheese in those recipes I do make. I do take an acidophilus supplement so I keep the probiotics coming regularly.
