Hi Debbie, yeah, there is info. out there that aluminum reacts with tomato

products and the combo should be avoided becasue the metal leaches into the food

and then a person injests it and it can increase the risk of alzheimer's...that

is the theory...i choose to avoid anything alminum coming in contact with any of

my food...

Granny and boy are they sharp. My mom transferred it from the pie plate to a glass bowl (she doesn't like aluminum either) saying that sharpness may go away. I didn't taste the apples ahead of time. Guess I won't try cooking it that way though. I have heard something about tomato juice or maybe just tomato and metal (I think--something reacts pffffft!) but I have a lot to learn cooking.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, lots of basic questions!

Marilyn, I was going to ask separately but since I'm here (sort of), I baked apples, onions, butter and cheddar in a tin foil pie plate because it was just easier. I have been eating this a lot lately but first time using the pie pan instead of glass. It's SOOOO tart, like a sharpness. Is there some reason you shouldn't cook apples in tin, foil or metal or is it just the apples were tart maybe? Thanks

I don't know of any reason why you shouldn't bake in foil. Some people do not like it because of the aluminum, but that's not an issue for me. I wouldn't STORE any leftovers in it because they may pick up a " metallic " taste, just like, in the days when we used canned goods, you didn't store a partial can of something in the original can.

What kind of apples did you use?
