If he's eating a lot of salt that will increase fears. Try giving him Rescue Remedy, watch his diet, Pantothenic Acid (B5) will calm down stress and fears.

For the last week or so my son has developed some really intense fears that he has never had before. He suddenly is afraid of “beetlesâ€, “dogsâ€, “spidersâ€, bullies etc.. He actually begins to panic frantically screams and cries.

Example: Today we leave our house and he will not move from the door with a very petrified look on his face. He begins to tell me “I want to go with you mom†but he is not moving. I ask him what is wrong and he begins to yell and cry and tell me “be careful mom, be careful!†and he is pointing at a dead leaf close to my feet. He is really frantic, he has never been this way before , where is this coming from?

Hey there...

Maureen, I would take him to see a psych. Maybe they can get something out of him that you can't. How old is he?

My son did not go out of the house for a whole month. He would run away from the door if it was opened. (this is the same boy that if you were not careful would go for a walk alone around the neighborhood!) He would not even get in the pool which was his favorite passtime for 16 years. Don't remember name of med, but it helped. However, afterwards, he would not get in a car at all, no matter whose car, who was driving, type of car, etc. This lasted 5 months. No behaviorist, was able to help.

Don't know how old your son is, but it may be part of the adolescent behaviors and hormones. Talk to a psychiatrist.

I am having a ittle bit of the same issue. My son, who use to loved the words "Do you want to go into the pool?"...now is so afrad of the pool. When my husband, myself or even my mother in law ask him if he wants to go into the pool he screams No, No, No. Myhusband even went into the pool at my mother in laws house and Tyler was so scared. This has been going on for months now.

As I read your post, I remembered how my daughter would have sudden

fears; example: she would repeatedly look up

at the ceiling and go into a panic because she was "afraid" of the

ceiling. I think that occurred pretty late in the school year.  Now we

recognize a seasonal pattern. Each year around May, she often has

strange reactions. Some years it is typical allergy-type symptoms.

Other years it becomes behavioral or sensory. This year it is increased

chemical sensitivity. Then it just disappears. [We're still waiting for

this year's manifestation to disappear!]

We had read in the past how it is not unusual for autistic individuals

to have different reactions to allergic triggers. The following is from

a link I just found [we had read better articles but this conveys the

idea]:

Immuno

Laboratories-Sidney Mac Baker, MD: "His allergic responses

were cognitive and behavioral in the absence

of the kinds of symptoms we usually consider to be allergic

(stuffiness, eczema, wheezing, itching)....I am saying that children

who have problems in the autistic spectrum ... are

sensitive not just in the area of their senses, but also in their

immune system's reaction to the environment." [Then Dr. Baker goes on to talk

about the central nervous system and immune systems.]

http://www.betterhealthusa.com/public/158.cfm

Both Baker and Doris Rapp write about allergies and autism. This may

have nothing to do with what your son is going through, but it may be

something else to consider.

Good luck!

How old is your son Tyler? Do you remember if he had any issues in the pool at any time?

My son loved the pool so much, it was very strange for him not to want to go in it.

Actually, 3 years before he had had a seizure while in the pool, and the next day he just wanted to go back in. I was the one that was afraid!

,

you say that Tyler's fear for the pool started at school. Did you talk to his teachers to find out what happened? What was the trigger? Did he continue to participate in the swimming lessons after that, and if so, how did he do?

Liz,

The swimming lessons were for a week. They just worked him to learn simple things in the pool, so he wasn't able to play like he normally does.

"not being able to play like he normally does" would not make him fearful. I believe it is vital that parents receive adequate info immediately when these things happen. Were his teachers able to describe to you what happened? Did they invite you to attend to his lessons? Did you request a parent-teacher conference?
