Guest guest
Hello all, I have been a lurker for the last few days and decided it was time to introduce myself. I felt like I was spying ) My name is Robbin and I will be 36 next week. I have two children ages 13 and 4. I have been married to the most wonderful fella for the last 10 years and he's a keeper. I live in Mobile, AL. I was digignosed with diabetes a few weeks ago and boy has it hit me hard. To start off with I was a gestational diabetic 13 years ago with my daughter but not with my son. It all started about 3 months ago I went in for a rutine eye exam to up grade my perscription and decided to go with contacts. When I went back a week later for the check up my eyes had totally changed. This happened every week for a month. In the mean time I was sent to my Dr. and had my blood sugar checked with the office meter and it was normal and then an A1c test that came back as 5.9%. I was told I did not have diabetes. All this time I was having other syptoms of a diabetic that I remembered from 13 years ago. (tiredness, blurry vision, cold sweats, sick to stomach, the shakes, thirsty, going to bathroom, etc). I had to have my liver checked because of a medication that I was on and we thought that was giving me the problems (Lamacil for toe nail fungus). He also checked my insulin while he had a vial of my blood and my sugars came back at 198 in the AM with nothing but a cup of coffee with equal in my system. So a 3 hour glucose test was scheduled. My fasting was 93, my 1 hour was 240 and my 2 hour was 204. Each time sugars were found in my urine also. So then I was diaginosed as a diabetic. So he tells me I'm a pre-diabetic and hands me a pamplet with a 1,500 calorie diabetic diet and says do this and excersise and sent me on my way. So I am left with tons on questions. I did get him to write me a prescrtiption for a meter and have one and useing it all the time. I have the Gretchen Becker book and am in the process of reading it. So here goes.... #1. Can a person be sensative to higher than normal blood sugars even though they are not above 200? I have problems when I go above 120 with blurry vision and get tired all the sudden. The only time I have been over 200 was 214 after I ate a bad thing... I know smack my hand. #2. I am testing all the time to see what will and what won't raise my blood sugar. At what time do I need to check after I eat a meal to get the truest reading from that meal? 1 or 2 hours after? #3. Once your sugars have gotten above 200 is there anything you can do to bring them down? Like when a person has low blood sugar they eat sugar to raise it back up. Or is it just a time thing? #4. I've done really good with taking the sugars out of my diet but carbs are my biggest problem. Until I know what does and does not raise my sugar am I going to have to test every time I eat or will I get to a point that I will just KNOW what raises it by the way I feel? #5. What excatly is my target blood sugar reading?? I think that is all that I will bother you with at the moment. I have some more but this post is getting way too long as it is. I am glad to be here and look forward to learning from people who have the same problems that I do. Robbin Mobile, AL

Most people check 2 hours after a meal. #3. Once your sugars have gotten above 200 is there anything you can do to bring them down? Or is it just a time thing? When I have a high number I go for a walk. #4. I've done really good with taking the sugars out of my diet but carbs are my biggest problem. I still test after I try new foods. I do not feel any difference if I have a reading of 80 or a reading of 150. #5. What excatly is my target blood sugar reading?? The Joslin Diabetes Center website has a lot of good information. Here is the link giving target blood sugar readings. http://www.joslin.org/education/library/wbggoal.shtml hugs Eunice
