Guest guest
Hi group, I'm new to this group. I'm a single mom of an 8 yo, Jon, who was dx'd Borderline and I think his bio-dad is Borderline too, although he isn't in treatment and doesn't think there's anything wrong with him. At first I thought Jon was bipolar, but now think differently. He's in hospital right now, 9th hospitilization this year, the year from hell. No prior hospitalizations before Jan 17 of this year. He's on risperdal, celexa, concerta and synthroid. I've been on a bipolar email list before this when I thought it was bipolar, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you and finding out all about you and benefiting from your experiences and insights and support. For now, I'd appreciate any thoughts about custody related matters. I have full legal and full physical custody, and Jon's dad has been fighting me for 9 years pretty consistently for custody on the grounds that I'm emotionally unstable and unfit (his words not mine). It's basically harrassment and right now he's suing again (2 upcomming court dates) because he's claiming all Jon's problems are my fault due to my " problems " . How do I convince social workers, GAL, judges, lawyers, that all his " accusations " are empty and how do I get them to see the picture? Every time I " oppose " him he of course accuses me of having a vendeta against him and all I'm doing is having a different opinion. Right now it centers around treatment for Jon: I'm pushing for Residential for now because he's so suicidal. But his dad Rick wants him to go live with him and " everything will be fine " . He's causing so much trouble because he schmoozes the social workers and then they can't understand why I don't want Jon to go live with " such an involved father " etc. Not that he's paying child support, because he's not (his reason being that I don't handle money well. go figure.) so it's not that he's supportive. AAArgh. And he's so impractical and imprudent that " compromising " with him only leads to disaster. How do I explain this to lawyers without sounding totally dictatorial? I'd love to step out of this fight, except that Jon really is suicidal right now (all year) and I feel like I'm fighting for his life at this point. He is also finally getting some insight into himself and understands that his emotions sometimes don't fit " facts " and is actually talking like he's willing to do " lots of work with lots of little rests inbetween " in order to learn how to not have his emotions bully him so much. He says he understands and wants to try, and I want to give him the best chance possible. This is the first time he's been saying this, and I'm encouraged. Should I be? Is it just more manipulations? This time last year he was telling everyone that I beat him when I'd be restraining him (fuel for his father's fire) and was totally grandiose. Now he acknowledges that he has a problem, even at times during an actual episode when he's screaming bloody murder at me I can sometimes get his attention and say " hey, do you really think THAT? " and he stops and gets confused and actually lets reality into the equation. The hospitals have been good for that, I think, becuase they don't let anything go past. And I've got a terrific psychiatrist and am really close to getting the funding for Residential. But I am so fried. And need help re the legal system. Anyway, I'd appreciate any BTDT insights because I'm at my wits end, financially broke, emotionally fried and really close to just saying " OK, go ahead everyone, send the suicidal ED kid out to live with the person who has no concept of anyone else having a need " . Guest guest
Don't give up on your son!! I know how it feels to want to just give up. You are doing the right thing by standing your ground with your son. If you got full custody there must have been a good reason your ex didn't get it. I know what it's like to fight for my daughters life. The last 3 years were my hell. Every day I thought I was going to find her dead in her room. Very scarey situation. Thankfully she is calming down now. What helped her calm down was the fact that she unloaded a big secret about her dad sexually molesting her from 7 yr old to 11. She held that in for 10 years!! She takes Celexa, lithium, and eskalith-cr(sp?). She is BPD and bipolar. She needed me to hang in there thru the hell she put me and herself thru. She needed me to be there when she came thru the other side. Things are better but even now I still know that at any moment she can slip back into her rage and start this hell all over again. Until then I will enjoy the little bit of peace we have. I stood by her side for this long and I won't give up. Keep sharing with us. Don't give up hope. phine --- elizabeth m kerr wrote: > Hi group, > > I'm new to this group.
