Hi Jodi,

It's Stimmel. It's good to hear from you. In my personal opinion I

think it'd be great if you give Dr. Harbison this listserve address so she

can join.

The convention registrations are still coming in so we don't have final

numbers or exactly who is coming yet. The biggest rush of registrations

comes in June.

Say hi to Max, , and Jenna for Jackie, Chelsey, and me.

Jodi:

I think it would be wonderful to have Dr. Harbison on the list. She will

certainly get a lot of questions from everyone. We have mentioned the MAGIC

conference a few times on this list and have given the MAGIC web address for

more information and have received further info also from Stimmel.

Thanks for giving Dr. H the information about this list.

Hi Jodi:

I think it's great that Dr. Harbison joins the RSS-Support group. We can

certainly learn a lot from this. The internet has HELPED me a lot in

dealing with RSS's the do's and don'ts.

quick question: what exactly is ketones?

My husband and I just came back from seeing Dr. Harbison. It was a mixed

visit. On the bad end, Max lost a little bit of weight and did not grow

too

much. We are going to start him back on Periactin to see if he gains

weight

this time. We are trying to avoid using the pump because Max is 10 and

wants to be rid of it. He and Dr. H. have an agreement that if he gets up

to 31 kilos by the next visit in three months, he can get rid of the

Mic-key

button. Oh, and he has to have NO ketones, either.

On the good side of it, she inserted the Zoladex in another manner and it

was alot less stressful and painful for Max. He was scared, but admitted

when it was all over that this way was much better. Want details? For the

squeamish, maybe you all had better let me know how much you want to know.

Dr. Harbison did not know about this list and would like to join it. What

do you think? I have her e-mail address so I can let her have it if you

think it is okay. She really wants to contact everyone to encourage

attending the MAGIC convention in July. She also wants to help. She does

have a heart of gold, even if I don't always see it.

Hello, ! I will e-mail Dr. Harbison right now and give her the

necessary info. I hope she really will participate. It was a rough visit

Ketones are protein that is released into the child's urine. When a body

does not receive enough food, it will turn to burning its own fat for fuel.

If there is not enough of that, it begins to burn muscle. That burning of

muscle causes small " pieces " of protein into the system. It is dangerous

because it is a form of hypoglycemia and a child can start vomiting

uncontrollably and dehydrate quickly. Max has been hospitalized many times

for this, although not in the past four years. We have to check him for

ketones every morning and thankfully he has not had any for a couple of

months. Now we do have to be careful because he did lose a little weight,

so his weight to height ratio is off again. One way I can tell when he has

ketones is that his breath smell like nail polish remover. It is from the

acidocis that results. We are trying to keep him eating well enough that he

does not need his pump at night. In fact, Dr. Harbison said that if he gets

up to 31 kilos, he will be able to get rid of the button!

I hope this helps.

I think it would be great for her to join the list, but does anyone think she

might get tired of answering questions, especially from people she's never met?

I didn't know, but I wish we could go see her.

Carmen, Mom of Storm 3yr 8mo.
