Guest guest
Michele, My Calcium is in the normal range (8.5-10.5), my value is 9.0. Why is it that our bodies absorb protein better from a supplement, like a shake, and not from real food (ie, chicken or fish). Doesn't it all go through the same process? (I'm sure you have covered this in the past, before I joined the list) Currently, I am using Designer Protein, from GNC, one scoop in the morning. Do I need to up it to 2x per day or more? Thanks Tamara in Pittsburgh

Your body can read fine in calcium for awhile even as you go into osteoporosis. It cannibalizes what it needs from the bones and organs. > > Why is it that our bodies absorb protein better from a supplement, > like a shake, and not from real food (ie, chicken or fish). (I'm sure you have covered this > in the past, before I joined the list) **************** because the supps are predigested, made specifically to be absorbed quickly. Food requires a stomach (ours is not in use) in order to digest, and then the first 12-18 inches of intestine for maximum absorption. While I am distal and get almost no absorption at all, even proiximals will lose an undisclosed amount of protein in their food. The question is, how much? With food, you're always guessing & hoping that you are right. Places too much THOUGHT into food and you're only guessing anyway. > > Currently, I am using Designer Protein, from GNC, one scoop in the > morning. Do I need to up it to 2x per day or more? ********** 2 sc X 2 a day = 68g which would be a nice kick up the ladder. But if you're mixing it with milk or juice, be aware of the extra sugar you're adding, as well. Shoot for about 30g at one time. Not counting anything but the supplement. > > Thanks > Tamara in Pittsburgh > > > --------------------------------------------------------------------<e|- > Best friends, most artistic, class clown Find 'em here: > http://click./1/8014/10/_/576511/_/966452258/ > --------------------------------------------------------------------|e>- > > >
Guest guest
, Thanks for the info. I'll up my protein ASAP. I already had on my list for my PCP to get me a bone scan schedule, in addition to other tests. Thanks Tamara in Pittsburgh

Guest guest
> Think protein supps and Viactiv for calcium three times a day. > Carolyn ~~~~~ Viactiv are calcium carbonate and although they do seem to work for some, many people actually, we also know that calcium citrate is more readily absorbed. Citracal is not as fun to take as the nice chocolate chew Viactiv, so my suggestion is to take both. you need a minimum of 1000mg. of supplemented calcium daily anyhow, and one of each will do that for you.
