Guest guest
Honestly if you want to live your life, allowing everyone using every one else's " mistakes " as your own, you MAY miss out on something wonderful. That was my whole point. I guess that I am just tired of you saying that after reading a certain book, that you will never raise chickens. It has been posted at least 5 times to the group. Each and every time I say something about a chicken. Now, I have watched my aunt grow chickens, my mom had chickens, and I wanted them soo bad. Even AFTER seeing how much work it is, and how messy and stinky they can be. Now, growing meat breeds of chickens in large warehouses is a different story. I have seen this aspect of it too. Growing up in a farming area... that was gross, and I would never do that to any animal. Try something new... There are many people that say to never have dogs, or to have rottweilers because they are evil. Both of mine are wonderful. It is all a perspective of life. If you want to live yours from other's perspectives, so be it... Guest guest
Angelia, Do you raise your chickens for meat and/or eggs? I'm just curious. I've always been a city kid. Anyway, I just wanted to say I enjoy your posts about your critters. :-)
Guest guest
I raise them for both. It is my " first " year doing them on my own. We have put 5 roosters in the freezer, and I will be putting at least one more in there. Stupid thing likes to attack the hand that feeds him.. grrr. I have two more roosters that I kinda like, but I am sure that once the mean one is gone, one of them will become " head " and become mean too. It is nature of the animals. I don't need a rooster to have eggs. They are pretty though... Angelia in OR who's next project is PIGS! ----- Original Message ----- > Angelia, > > Do you raise your chickens for meat and/or eggs? Guest guest
There are days when I want to do that (shoot him and bury him) with this one, though he (the rooster) keeps his distance from me now. I conked him a good one over the head with a stick the other day when he tried to attack me. He hasn't grown spurs yet. Though, I don't think that he is going to get the chance to grow spurs. I just haven't had time to butcher him out yet. And farm living is not as easy as many think (not that I am saying that you think it is easy). If we had many more animals, it would be HARD here. We are going to get pigs, and are hoping in the future to have about 10 breeding cows here, and a bull. I wouldn't mind breeding a few pigs too so that we can sell to the 4-H and FFA kids round here. Then we can sell the babies, and make a little money for upkeep on the farm here... Can also sell the beef to people... Once my chickens start laying well, (in the spring sometime after the winter molt) I will be able to sell some of the eggs. Right now they are laying little eggs. lots of them, but only little ones... I will be making some spatzle to freeze for soups. I think that I am going to make a few angel food cakes too... I have a " gathering " of some friends on The 25th that I need to bring food to... My garden didn't do as well as I would have liked this year. I tried some new things, and well... they didn't work out. I am going back to what I know next year, and hope that I wont have that problem. My herb garden is going to grow next year too...the only hard thing about that is, the flower and herb garden are part of the main garden area, and it is as big as hubby is going to allow...lol... though I am goin to buy or get some starts for elderberries next year and put them outside the fence. There are quite a few berries and fruits that I would love to grow. gee... this has gotten into a long ramble... I have so many Ideas in my head for things round here... I need to get dressed and off to the gym... then going to head to the river and pick some wild rosehips... yummy for tea! It went after Dad all the time with his spurs and pecked furiously....till one day Dad conked him with his sling-shot....and buried him in the manure pile. His parents never found out--until 50 years later--the last visit. He confessed. " Oh-- we just thought a Coyote got him " ....hee hee. > > Fawnee
