Guest guest
I'm wondering how many carbs people on this board eat per day. With people thinking that they can't have carbs because of diabetes and the whole new low carb diets to lose weight. Fact: It is estimated that you need at least 125 grams or more of carbohydrate just for your brain each day.

Personally I get between ~65 grams of carbs per day. Most of those are from low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. " carbs " is too general to describe this issue. You've got fruits, veggies, and grains, and each has their own rate at which they break down to sugar. Although ALL of them do in the end, and therefore raise blood sugar. In treating diabetes, and losing weight it's best to stick to carbs that are the slowest to turn to sugar in our bodies. Low-carb diets aren't new - they are what was before low-fat came to town. With the way people eat today that IS low carb!!! The average American eats over 300 grams of carbs a day! I eat 100-130 grams of carbs a day! Guest guest
I also wonder how many people count only starch foods as " carbs " and not the carbs in green veggies or other non-starch foods. I personally count total carbs in all foods whether starch or non-starch. My body does not tolerate more than 35 carbs per meal plus weight gain associated with more food intake. Cardiologist told me a BS of 100 was sufficient for brain nourishment. Many may maintain this BS better than others depending on how their body handles carbs and how the BS rocks along during the day/night. Some will be able to consume fewer cabs and still have a 100 BS than others. Marie > > > I'm wondering how many carbs people on this board eat per day. Guest guest
>> It is estimated that you need at least 125 grams or more of >>> carbohydrate just for your brain each day. I am not representing myself as knowing the " the truth " on this, but I read somewhere that, in general, we need 25 to 30 grams of carbohydrate just to power the brain. And I noticed, back in my days of experimenting with how I could eat and survive, that if I ate fewer carbs than this I felt " spacy " and " floating. " So I am inclined to think this is fairly accurate. However it was the " Glycemic Index " that helped me put together a theory that lets me vary my menu and be able to " enjoy " eating on a regular basis. Before I discovered that, I had to stick to pre-tested combinations of foods in order to keep my blood glucose steady. Variety is lots more fun. And it makes the diet easier to stick to. Guest guest
Per my Dr, my dietitian, and my brother in law who has lots of schooling in nutrition and bodies we need 120g of carbs to make the brain work correctly. Now, each person is different, and you may need less, or more. I do know that if I don't eat 5 times a day, my brain gets muddled, and I don't know what is going on. Blood sugar isn't too low, is just that my body is running out of brain food. Angelia in OR who is eating organic steel cut oats with a WHOLE organic banana in it... mmm... don't forget organic cinnamon..... Guest guest
Eskimos eat almost no carbs, yet are a very healthy people. Indeed, the least healthy of them are those who have started eating the White Man's way.
