Guest guest
Mindy, I'm not sure how much " like " Atkins it is. It seems to me from this forum and the other WLS patients I've talked with everyone settles on a different diet, some are allergic to a variety of different foods, many have different prefences and habits they continue with even after surgery. The similarities are, or should be, that protein is a big part of the diet. Carbs are not necessarily bad things. They just need to be prioritized below protein for the most part. Also the TYPE of carbs is what's important. While some of my diet is still carbs it's not cookies, candy or other sugary things. What problems did you have sticking to Atkins? Maybe you should discuss with your surgeon or their staff about how you can modify your post WLS diet to address the problems you had with Atkins. At my recent three month meeting the main direction I was given was to eat only three meals and one snack, only for 20-30 minutes at a time, limit ourselves to 1000-1200 calories, drink loads of water (I've never heard that before…sheesh), and to now incorporate a limit on fat grams. I'm having a tough time with the fat grams and the calorie limits some days because a lot of proteins have fat in them. By problems I mean over by 5-10 grams and 200-300 calories. I try to keep things in perspective though considering before surgery I was probably taking in 1000-1200 calories PER MEAL so I'm still losing. > > Question: It sounds like, from everything I've been reading about protein, protein, protein and no or little carbs that we are to be on something like the Atkins diet after WLS? Is that correct? I've tried Atkins befor and had problems sticking to it but if that's what is required after surgery I will do it. > Mindy > > > > > --------------------------------- > New Yahoo! Guest guest
Mike, My problems with the Atkins diet were that I am also bi-polar and when I get into a depressive mood I crave my comfort foods - which are all carbs. Mashed potatoes and noodles, chocolate, sugar sugar sugar - stuff like that. I realize this will be a problem after WLS too - but I will have a tool to help me deal with my massive appetite too. For the most part Atkins wasn't hard for me when not batteling depression, becaus I love meat, eggs, and cheese - the primary proteins. I'm always shy of getting in my veggies - not that I don't like veggies but I detest cooking for myself - even making a salad. I love salad bars where it's all chopped up for you - but I've thrown away TONS of $$ by buying salad fixings and swearing THIS TIME I would actually eat them. I've tried all kinds of tricks - chopping it all up at once so it would be ready for me and everything else. Nothing works. I don't like fixing myself salads. Maybe I'll be more motiviated when I lose weight - who knows. Mindy --------------------------------- Love cheap thrills? Enjoy PC-to-Phone calls to 30+ countries for just 2¢/min with Yahoo! Guest guest
I have recently discovered in the last week that the South Beach Diet is EXACTLY what I was looking for, for the high protien recipies and everything. I mean, I will have to adjust a little to what is right for my situation, the portions, etc...but it's the closest I have found so far. Just an idea. Guest guest
Mindy, Spooky...I've been diagnosed as " slighty " bi-polar. Not sure how to guage what slight is but it was enough to really make me stressed/angry/jumpy/paranoid about 5 years ago while going through a divorce. Anyway, I'm a firm believer of better living through medication. I used to take Depakote and then Depakote extended release and then Lamictal and Abilify (very expensive). Most of these medications would make me tired so I'd take them at night. Also, one or more of them were not weight loss/management friendly. It's also possible/probable that I too craved bad for me foods when depressed. Who am I kidding? I ate poorly when things were hyper/manic too. Sigh.... Note: I'm not recommending you do this but a month after my surgery I was feeling so good/positive. I was told to discontinue my blood pressure meds by my surgeon. I went to my psych and asked if I could try not taking my bi-polar meds because all they seemed to be doing was " helping " /forcing me to go to sleep in the evening after I take them. I wasn't really feeling the same as I had months before. I'm not sure if that makes sense. We worked it out where I could stop taking my meds and I haven't had them now for a few months. It's possible that this isn't a long term option for me and certainly WLS is no cure for bi-polarism but there are a lot of hormones and deperession symptoms tied to weight (both gain and loss) so I'm hoping I can continue progressing in the positive. If you don't like to cook for yourself get a freezer and fill it with Healthy Choice or SmartOnes dinners. They don't seem like much now but I have one every day for lunch now and it's got only 250-350 calories, some vegitables, I make sure I get chicken ones so 18-26g of protein and usually less than 10g of fat. For me, at the office, they're a cheap lunch if I get them on sale and even if I don't. They're plenty filling for me too with the WLS. Don't worry about salads. I do eat salads now, small ones, but I usually pick at them and only eat half because otherwise I'll get too filled up if I'm out dining and eating a salad before a protein based dinner. What I do eat a lot of is tuna salad. I make it with fat free mayo, mustard and a spoonful of dill relish. I could eat that stuff all day long. It's packed with protein and very low in calories. Cottage cheese is good too. I craved that immidiately after surgery but don't eat it so much anymore. I might start again though because it's got calcium in it too. Most of my protein intact now is through chicken but I do eat hamburger, steak and cheeses too. Egg yellows weren't agreeing with me a couple of months ago. They might be ok for me now so I should try them again. When I have a snack and don't feel like still another protein I try to have a bright colorful fruit like strawberries or blueberries. Either that or a can of lite pears or lite peaches. Raisins too, yum! Get yourself a steamer maybe and try steaming brocolli, carrots, cauliflower, etc. I love brocolli. Truth be told I don't make it enough or get enough vegitables either. It is still sometimes hard for me to get all the protein in whilst trying to get in some fiber, vegis, vitamins, etc. Good Luck, Mike > > Mike, My problems with the Atkins diet were that I am also bi-polar and when I get into a depressive mood I crave my comfort foods - which are all carbs. Guest guest
I'm a new person here. Can I jump in? Do we follow the Adkind Diet after surgery. I was on it and couldn't stay on it for a long time. Why would it work after surgery and not before surgery?
