Wanted to do that but didnt get that response from the dietician so I am going to try again. As I understand it, with the 4 meals. one is split up into 2 for two seperate snacks given at different times of the day (for us it would be 10:30am with the class at school and 3:30pm as after school snack.) These snacks each contain a complete ratio - fat, carb, and protein. And together, these two snacks make a complete meal. If you would add a complete ratio snack along with the 4 meals for the day, it wouldnt change the ratio (as each meal/snack would have the exact same ratio), but it would increase calories thus throwing things off. You do have it right tho, she would get a full ratio but only 1/2 calories at each snack. OK, this is a meal for Mike (keep in mind that we are doing a slightly different diet) 37g cream 32.6g skim milk 10g saltine crackers 4.5g butter 29g string cheese 9g MCT oil 40g cantaloupe Keep in mind that this right now is based on 3 meals a day not 4 for us - havent switched things over yet. So, based on this, a snack for Mike would be: 18.5g cream 16.3g skim milk 5g saltine crackers 2.3g butter (should be 2.25 but since scale only goes one decimal point and this is fat it gets rounded up) 14.5g string cheese 4.5g MCT oil 20g cantaloupe Now we work on exchanges so I am not totally sure that both snacks would have to be the same for us - we could change the fruit, carb, or protien, as long as we only use 1/2 his amount. Hope this makes a bit of sense. Actually typing it out makes sense to me too - I have been trying to figure out what kinds of meals to split. If you are good at figuring you could probably do recipes like the cookies - I am still not too sure about that one (altho I am quite sure he would love to have peanut butter cookies for a snack when the other kids have cookies or something like that). I have been trying to get the dietician to give me equivalents for butter and MCT oil so I can decrease the MCT and add more butter if needed in a particular meal. I dont know how to do this on my own yet and I am quite sure they arent equal. I am totally terrified about Mike going to school too. We are supposed to have a full time aide and I wont know if there is one in place til next week. If there isnt they sure dont have much time to get one. I just have to believe that everything will work out or I will go nuts! I have seen others mention adding a snack here and there for whatever reason. Someone mentioned this after their swimming time or when their child had been very active (like one of the shakes or something). I am curious...is this something that was split up with another meal? Do i understand correctly, that every meal is the complete ratio? Can you split a meal up and give part of it a few hours apart and the total of the 2 equals the entire ratio? Or is the scenario I mentioned maybe just an added extra for that day? Would that not throw off the ratio to add something? I know this was discussed before so sorry for repeat of the discussion. Can you give me an example of a meal split in two and used for a snack? I'm unclear as to how to do that. I can't talk to the teacher until the week before school so I don't know about snack time yet. I'm anxious to iron that out. I'm nervous about doing all of this with school. While on vacation I've got her on a schedule already, on day 4 of when she's eating and it will work with school unless there is a snack somewhere which I'm sure there will be. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2002 Report Share Posted August 8, 2002 Do you have an aide with her, or someone older in the school that you trust (not sure what grades your school goes to) that could sit with her at first and see how she does? Maybe you could ask that she sit close to the supervisor (I am assuming that there is some sort of supervision in the lunch room) so she can still be with the other children, but the supervisor can keep an extra eye out for her. I know this is all in a perfect world, but maybe something would work. We do have a full time aide so if Mike does have to stay after christmas there will be someone there with him just to make sure. I dont think for us leaving the room would be a good idea as Mike gets very upset when he is " too different " from everyone else. So far, he doesnt seem to care what everyone else is eating. When he was in preschool, they had him sitting with the other kids (I gave him pickles as a snack) and they were eating cheese, fruit, popcorn or whatever. some days he didnt even want his snack (it was free so didnt disrupt the calories at all if he didnt finish) and would be happy to just go sit and play. The kids here sit in their class room (no lunch room) so we will also be making arrangements that Mike can have some toys at his place or he will be allowed to go play with certain things after he is done eating, so he doesnt have to sit and watch the other kids eat (his portions obviously are much smaller than everyone elses) They dont really like it when the kids bring candy to school (altho there is no specific rule against it) so I will have to get the aide to check the classroom after lunch even if Mike doesnt stay incase someone leaves some forgotten candy on a table, or at a center if it is an indoor day. Guess I have more things to talk with them about that I thought. Hope things go well for Karley. When is her first day of school? Guest guest Posted August 8, 2002 Report Share Posted August 8, 2002 -- a few meals that split really well are peanut butter cookies (butter, peanut butter, eggs, sweetener), chocolate custard (unsweetened chocolate, eggs, cream, butter, vanilla, sweetener), and 's pumpkin pancakes (one pancake plus butter and whipped cream is half a meal). I can try sending me meal planner again if it helps. What I do is give two macademia nuts and a drink for school snack, a half a meal at 4:00, dinner at 7:30 and another half meal at 9:30 (my kids go to bed late in the summer... during the year I give a full meal at 4, then another at 8). Tuna salad with lettuce and tomato also splits really well, but Leo's off mayo so we don't do that anymore. I found its easiest to bury a lot of the oil in the cream shakes by mixing with frozen fruit and sweetener. Raspberries work really well. Hope this helps. We have four meal plans/day. With one -- the peanut butter cookies -- I split the meal plan in half and she gets 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon. At first my dietician told me I couldn't do it this way. I told her that many on this list were and she told me to go ahead and try. The AM snack helped socially and the PM snack helped with a late afternoon blood sugar dip that was resulting in a seizure. So, it worked out nicely. Now that we've been on the diet awhile, I'm also more liberal with macademia nuts and freebies, especially on days when she's been very active or we're on vacation, like at Disneyland. She's at the maturity level of a 3 yo and doesn't worry much about that type of thing. She'll just want what they have because it smells good or looks good but she could care less about being different in any way at this point. I'm thankful for that at the moment.
