Guest guest
HI, Tara Welcome. Here's what I suggest: 1. Have your doctor refer you to a Diabetes Educator and/or a Regestered Dietician. Most hospitals have them on staff or at least know where to find one. They will help you form a meal plan that is specific to your needs and give you other information on things like food for sick days, what to do if a meal is going to be later than normal, etc. 2. Get a copy of Diabetes for Dummies. A lot of good information in one book. 3. Everything on the 'net is contradictory because diabetes affects each individual a little bit differently and what works for one may not work for another. When you've been here a while, you'll notice this from reading the posts. Let us know how you are doing as you adjust to this disease. The support of other diabetecs is very important. Hope this helps. Peace, Deni in Pa. Wife/Mother/Homemaker Eternal companion to my hero, Jim Mom to and Hello;) I'm New..... My name is Tara & we live on a Boat in Wa State. I had been feeling HORRIBLE for a long time but 4 days prior to discovery i craved water like an addict must crave drugs!Drinking 10 plus liters a day.I lost 12 lbs in 3 days...I knew i did not have the flu but had no idea, really.Just something in the back of my mind said Diabetes,as my Dad had diabetes in the 1950's.I am 51 yrs old. Ok,drug myself into the Emergency care.Blood was at 386 on a 20 hr fast. They tried to put me into the Hospital but caught my DR and put me on 2 pills & released me;( Metformin 500 mgs twice a day for one week then 2 tablets twice daily thereafter....and Glipizide 5 mgs once a day. Can i please get general info or best book to buy??? I am on my own & everything i read on the net is contradicting. What is food for a basic day? I know no alcohol or cigarettes, nothing white but i hear rice is good? Can i have fruit?? I ate a bananna. In 3 days i have had Lentyl canned soup,Progresso split pea & ham soup, twice, canned chili with beef & cinnamon (That is good! Thanks, lol) lean chicken (can i have roasted skin?) and a sandwich made of lean black angus beef, pepper jack cheese,a tab of mayo, horseradish & lettuce on WW nut bread.Did i mess up??? Can i have tomatoes, cottage cheese? Any salad dressing? Cold Cereal? In 2 days drank 20 liters of water (STILL thirsty) I'm off to the lab for another blood draw,tomorrow..... At least this explains alot.I thought i was severely depressed,an emotion i had never known....could not get out of bed due to dizziness & sweating, knots in my stomach, fuzzy mind, shaking, dry eyes, leg pain, numbness in my arms & hands. Sorry this was so long but i need Help, please? I'm floundering..... Much Love & Thanks, Tara. Guest guest
Two excellent books: DIABETES FOR DUMMIES and DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION. The former, like all of the FOR DUMMIES and COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE books gives basic information in easy-to-understand form. Dr. Bernstein is a cardiologist who is himself diabetic. Check with your nearest large hospital or with your county's department of health to see if either gives a Diabetes Education class. Don't trust anything published before 1990, and take anything published before '95 with a grain of salt. There have been vast strides in diabetes science since then. Good luck! Hello;) I'm New.....
