Kristy,

You left off part of 's message and therefore made it read as if she was

saying that Olive oil and the Omega3 oils were bad. Here is 's quote.

For one thing, the Atkins diet allows far too many saturated fats and does

not distinquish sufficiently between the good fats, for example olive oil and

the Omega3 oils, and the result can lead to serious artery complications.

Hi ,

Continue what you are doing. Omega3 oils/vitamins are good for you.

Even though I think most low carb diets go way to far in limiting

carbs, I'm appreciating what they are doing to the fast/convience

food industry. Now if we can just get them to cut down on the fat at

the same time things might get healthy.

Subway will make any sandwich a wrap, not just the two bacon filled

Atkins ones they advertise.

I too thought that extra virgin olive, in small doses, was good for the heart

and the kidneys.

Okay, I just ate a wrap at Subway.

Hi Sandy,

Have you tested after eating the wraps? I have found that some low carb

foods, especially the 7 gram bread, causes my bg's to be higher than the honey

wheat bread I bake.

Olive oil is probably the best oil to use.

Then Subway is really a good place for people with diabetes to eat? I didn't

think of that. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and am getting use to the

diabetes diet. Thank you very much for the information.

You can get a good low carb meal at any restaurant. Just ask for

substitutions - have a salad or cottage cheese instead of fries or

other potatoes. Some restuarants like Perkins offers a choice of two

sides with an entree. Just pick two that are on your eating plan. If

you want a burger, ask for it on whole wheat bread instead of a

bun... or if need be, no bread or bun at all. Other than fast food

restaurants, almost all places will be happy to substitute side

dishes. If not, just don't eat what comes with it, or have them hold

the things high in carbs altogether.

There is a Friday's restaurant here as I said earlier, but not sure of the TGIF

one. It was years ago that I went there. It is a huge restaurant with music and

plenty of great food to choose from.

" TGI Friday's " is a national chain of casual dining restaurants, not

unlike Applebees. I've not tried their 'low carb' or 'Atkins' menu, but

the last time we went to one--before they had introduced it, but it was

probably 'in development'--we explained to my server that we were

diabetic and couldn't eat potatoes. He allowed me to substitute steamed

broccoli for the baked potato, and my father to have carrot sticks and

celery in place of his French (excuse me, 'Freedom') fries.

Re: Re: Re Low Carb Diets

Subways does have a new Atkins Wrap. I havent tried it though. TGIF

sounds familir. I wonder If there is one here. There is a Friday's

restaurant and I am sure they have low carb menus, after all, it is a

meaty restaurant as are them steak houses and steak and Ales places.

They have so much steaks, seafoods, and poutry.

No need to even explain that you're diabetic. With all of the low

carb eaters right now, most restaurants will happily substitute

veggies for potatoes. We were with a large group of people for dinner

last night and the server never batted an eye when asked for

substitutions of any kind.

Perhaps not. However, mentioning my diabetes is--and this is just IMHO/YMMV--a

shorthand way of saying, " I understand that I'm making a difficult job harder,

but I do have a good reason for asking for substitutions. "

I find that by mentioning that I am a diabetic they will bend over backwards to

find what I need and to substitute things. I am not ashamed of being Diabetic.

I'm not ashamed of it either, Helen. I was simply saying that

restaurants are very good about making substitutions without needing

a reason to do so.

I thought this was going to be a support group. I've never seen so

much arguing and carrying on. So many blanket statements that

shouldn't be made. So much jumping on each other. Can't we leave our

egos behind and stop this crap?

We all have an illness that isn't going to go away. We ALL live with

it daily. We ALL have different things we can and can't eat. And we

ALL have different people we trust to help us through it, be they

doctors, education nurses, nutritionists, professors, authors,

spouses or just those we love. There are going to be as many

different opinions among them as there are things to disagree on.

Let's agree that we can all disagree, but that we don't have to shove

each others beliefs down everyone else's throats, ok?

Support each other for goodness sake. From what I understood when I

joined this group, that's what it's all about. There's enough stress

in the rest of our lives. Can't we leave it at the door when we come

in here?????

will agree on everything. I think sometimes that it is best to just read. helen

I have enough friends in the restaurant business to know that theirs is a

difficult, stressful line of work; a fussy, picky customer who asks about the

ingredients and methods of preparation and wants to make substitutions doesn't

make it any easier; I mention to the server that I'm diabetic to let them know

that I'm not asking for substitutions just to be difficult, but rather because I

have a good reason.
